The Clot

ٱقۡرَأۡ بِٱسۡمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلَّذِي خَلَقَ1

Ayah 1

Translation of the meaningRead, ˹O Prophet,˺ in the Name of your Lord Who created—

خَلَقَ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ مِنۡ عَلَقٍ2

Ayah 2

Translation of the meaningcreated humans from a clinging clot

ٱقۡرَأۡ وَرَبُّكَ ٱلۡأَكۡرَمُ3

Ayah 3

Translation of the meaningRead! And your Lord is the Most Generous

ٱلَّذِي عَلَّمَ بِٱلۡقَلَمِ4

Ayah 4

Translation of the meaningWho taught by the pen—

عَلَّمَ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ مَا لَمۡ يَعۡلَمۡ5

Ayah 5

Translation of the meaningtaught humanity what they knew not

كَلَّآ إِنَّ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ لَيَطۡغَىٰٓ6

Ayah 6

Translation of the meaningMost certainly, one exceeds all bounds

أَن رَّءَاهُ ٱسۡتَغۡنَىٰٓ7

Ayah 7

Translation of the meaningonce they think they are self-sufficient

إِنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ ٱلرُّجۡعَىٰٓ8

Ayah 8

Translation of the meaning˹But˺ surely to your Lord is the return ˹of all˺

أَرَءَيۡتَ ٱلَّذِي يَنۡهَىٰ9

Ayah 9

Translation of the meaningHave you seen the man who prevents

عَبۡدًا إِذَا صَلَّىٰٓ10

Ayah 10

Translation of the meaninga servant ˹of Ours˺ from praying

أَرَءَيۡتَ إِن كَانَ عَلَى ٱلۡهُدَىٰٓ11

Ayah 11

Translation of the meaningWhat if this ˹servant˺ is ˹rightly˺ guided

أَوۡ أَمَرَ بِٱلتَّقۡوَىٰٓ12

Ayah 12

Translation of the meaningor encourages righteousness

أَرَءَيۡتَ إِن كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ13

Ayah 13

Translation of the meaningWhat if that ˹man˺ persists in denial and turns away

أَلَمۡ يَعۡلَم بِأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَرَىٰ14

Ayah 14

Translation of the meaningDoes he not know that Allah sees ˹all˺

كَلَّا لَئِن لَّمۡ يَنتَهِ لَنَسۡفَعَۢا بِٱلنَّاصِيَةِ15

Ayah 15

Translation of the meaningBut no! If he does not desist, We will certainly drag him by the forelock—

نَاصِيَةࣲ كَٰذِبَةٍ خَاطِئَةࣲ‏16

Ayah 16

Translation of the meaninga lying, sinful forelock

فَلۡيَدۡعُ نَادِيَهُۥ17

Ayah 17

Translation of the meaningSo let him call his associates

سَنَدۡعُ ٱلزَّبَانِيَةَ18

Ayah 18

Translation of the meaningWe will call the wardens of Hell

كَلَّا لَا تُطِعۡهُ وَٱسۡجُدۡۤ وَٱقۡتَرِب۩19

Ayah 19

Translation of the meaningAgain, no! Never obey him ˹O Prophet˺! Rather, ˹continue to˺ prostrate and draw near ˹to Allah˺
