Defrauding

وَيۡلࣱ لِّلۡمُطَفِّفِينَ1

Ayah 1

Translation of the meaningWoe to the defrauders

ٱلَّذِينَ إِذَا ٱكۡتَالُواْ عَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ يَسۡتَوۡفُونَ2

Ayah 2

Translation of the meaningThose who take full measure ˹when they buy˺ from people

وَإِذَا كَالُوهُمۡ أَو وَّزَنُوهُمۡ يُخۡسِرُونَ3

Ayah 3

Translation of the meaningbut give less when they measure or weigh for buyers

أَلَا يَظُنُّ أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ أَنَّهُم مَّبۡعُوثُونَ4

Ayah 4

Translation of the meaningDo such people not think that they will be resurrected

لِيَوۡمٍ عَظِيمࣲ‏5

Ayah 5

Translation of the meaningfor a tremendous Day—

يَوۡمَ يَقُومُ ٱلنَّاسُ لِرَبِّ ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ6

Ayah 6

Translation of the meaningthe Day ˹all˺ people will stand before the Lord of all worlds

كَلَّآ إِنَّ كِتَٰبَ ٱلۡفُجَّارِ لَفِي سِجِّينࣲ‏7

Ayah 7

Translation of the meaningBut no! The wicked are certainly bound for Sijjîn ˹in the depths of Hell˺—

وَمَآ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا سِجِّينࣱ‏8

Ayah 8

Translation of the meaningand what will make you realize what Sijjîn is?—

كِتَٰبࣱ مَّرۡقُومࣱ‏9

Ayah 9

Translation of the meaninga fate ˹already˺ sealed

وَيۡلࣱ يَوۡمَئِذࣲ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ10

Ayah 10

Translation of the meaningWoe on that Day to the deniers—

ٱلَّذِينَ يُكَذِّبُونَ بِيَوۡمِ ٱلدِّينِ11

Ayah 11

Translation of the meaningthose who deny Judgment Day

وَمَا يُكَذِّبُ بِهِۦٓ إِلَّا كُلُّ مُعۡتَدٍ أَثِيمٍ12

Ayah 12

Translation of the meaningNone would deny it except every evildoing transgressor

إِذَا تُتۡلَىٰ عَلَيۡهِ ءَايَٰتُنَا قَالَ أَسَٰطِيرُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ13

Ayah 13

Translation of the meaningWhenever Our revelations are recited to them, they say, “Ancient fables!”

كَلَّاۖ بَلۡۜ رَانَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِم مَّا كَانُواْ يَكۡسِبُونَ14

Ayah 14

Translation of the meaningBut no! In fact, their hearts have been stained by all ˹the evil˺ they used to commit

كَلَّآ إِنَّهُمۡ عَن رَّبِّهِمۡ يَوۡمَئِذࣲ لَّمَحۡجُوبُونَ15

Ayah 15

Translation of the meaningUndoubtedly, they will be sealed off from their Lord on that Day

ثُمَّ إِنَّهُمۡ لَصَالُواْ ٱلۡجَحِيمِ16

Ayah 16

Translation of the meaningMoreover, they will surely burn in Hell

ثُمَّ يُقَالُ هَٰذَا ٱلَّذِي كُنتُم بِهِۦ تُكَذِّبُونَ17

Ayah 17

Translation of the meaningand then be told, “This is what you used to deny.”

كَلَّآ إِنَّ كِتَٰبَ ٱلۡأَبۡرَارِ لَفِي عِلِّيِّينَ18

Ayah 18

Translation of the meaningBut no! The virtuous are certainly bound for ’Illiyûn ˹in elevated Gardens˺—

وَمَآ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا عِلِّيُّونَ19

Ayah 19

Translation of the meaningand what will make you realize what ’Illiyûn is?—

كِتَٰبࣱ مَّرۡقُومࣱ‏20

Ayah 20

Translation of the meaninga fate ˹already˺ sealed

يَشۡهَدُهُ ٱلۡمُقَرَّبُونَ21

Ayah 21

Translation of the meaningwitnessed by those nearest ˹to Allah˺

إِنَّ ٱلۡأَبۡرَارَ لَفِي نَعِيمٍ22

Ayah 22

Translation of the meaningSurely the virtuous will be in bliss

عَلَى ٱلۡأَرَآئِكِ يَنظُرُونَ23

Ayah 23

Translation of the meaning˹seated˺ on ˹canopied˺ couches, gazing around

تَعۡرِفُ فِي وُجُوهِهِمۡ نَضۡرَةَ ٱلنَّعِيمِ24

Ayah 24

Translation of the meaningYou will recognize on their faces the glow of delight

يُسۡقَوۡنَ مِن رَّحِيقࣲ مَّخۡتُومٍ25

Ayah 25

Translation of the meaningThey will be given a drink of sealed, pure wine

خِتَٰمُهُۥ مِسۡكࣱۚ وَفِي ذَٰلِكَ فَلۡيَتَنَافَسِ ٱلۡمُتَنَٰفِسُونَ26

Ayah 26

Translation of the meaningwhose last sip will smell like musk. So let whoever aspires to this strive ˹diligently˺

وَمِزَاجُهُۥ مِن تَسۡنِيمٍ27

Ayah 27

Translation of the meaningAnd this drink’s flavour will come from Tasnîm—

عَيۡنࣰ ا يَشۡرَبُ بِهَا ٱلۡمُقَرَّبُونَ28

Ayah 28

Translation of the meaninga spring from which those nearest ˹to Allah˺ will drink

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ أَجۡرَمُواْ كَانُواْ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ يَضۡحَكُونَ29

Ayah 29

Translation of the meaningIndeed, the wicked used to laugh at the believers

وَإِذَا مَرُّواْ بِهِمۡ يَتَغَامَزُونَ30

Ayah 30

Translation of the meaningwink to one another whenever they passed by

وَإِذَا ٱنقَلَبُوٓاْ إِلَىٰٓ أَهۡلِهِمُ ٱنقَلَبُواْ فَكِهِينَ31

Ayah 31

Translation of the meaningand muse ˹over these exploits˺ upon returning to their own people

وَإِذَا رَأَوۡهُمۡ قَالُوٓاْ إِنَّ هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ لَضَآلُّونَ32

Ayah 32

Translation of the meaningAnd when they saw the faithful, they would say, “These ˹people˺ are truly astray,”

وَمَآ أُرۡسِلُواْ عَلَيۡهِمۡ حَٰفِظِينَ33

Ayah 33

Translation of the meaningeven though they were not sent as keepers over the believers

فَٱلۡيَوۡمَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ مِنَ ٱلۡكُفَّارِ يَضۡحَكُونَ34

Ayah 34

Translation of the meaningBut on that Day the believers will be laughing at the disbelievers

عَلَى ٱلۡأَرَآئِكِ يَنظُرُونَ35

Ayah 35

Translation of the meaningas they sit on ˹canopied˺ couches, looking on

هَلۡ ثُوِّبَ ٱلۡكُفَّارُ مَا كَانُواْ يَفۡعَلُونَ36

Ayah 36

Translation of the meaning˹The believers will be asked,˺ “Have the disbelievers ˹not˺ been paid back for what they used to do?”
