The Overthrowing

إِذَا ٱلشَّمۡسُ كُوِّرَتۡ1

Ayah 1

Translation of the meaningWhen the sun is put out

وَإِذَا ٱلنُّجُومُ ٱنكَدَرَتۡ2

Ayah 2

Translation of the meaningand when the stars fall down

وَإِذَا ٱلۡجِبَالُ سُيِّرَتۡ3

Ayah 3

Translation of the meaningand when the mountains are blown away

وَإِذَا ٱلۡعِشَارُ عُطِّلَتۡ4

Ayah 4

Translation of the meaningand when pregnant camels are left untended

وَإِذَا ٱلۡوُحُوشُ حُشِرَتۡ5

Ayah 5

Translation of the meaningand when wild beasts are gathered together

وَإِذَا ٱلۡبِحَارُ سُجِّرَتۡ6

Ayah 6

Translation of the meaningand when the seas are set on fire

وَإِذَا ٱلنُّفُوسُ زُوِّجَتۡ7

Ayah 7

Translation of the meaningand when the souls ˹and their bodies˺ are paired ˹once more˺

وَإِذَا ٱلۡمَوۡءُۥدَةُ سُئِلَتۡ8

Ayah 8

Translation of the meaningand when baby girls, buried alive, are asked

بِأَيِّ ذَنۢبࣲ قُتِلَتۡ9

Ayah 9

Translation of the meaningfor what crime they were put to death

وَإِذَا ٱلصُّحُفُ نُشِرَتۡ10

Ayah 10

Translation of the meaningand when the records ˹of deeds˺ are laid open

وَإِذَا ٱلسَّمَآءُ كُشِطَتۡ11

Ayah 11

Translation of the meaningand when the sky is stripped away

وَإِذَا ٱلۡجَحِيمُ سُعِّرَتۡ12

Ayah 12

Translation of the meaningand when the Hellfire is fiercely flared up

وَإِذَا ٱلۡجَنَّةُ أُزۡلِفَتۡ13

Ayah 13

Translation of the meaningand when Paradise is brought near—

عَلِمَتۡ نَفۡسࣱ مَّآ أَحۡضَرَتۡ14

Ayah 14

Translation of the meaning˹on that Day˺ each soul will know what ˹deeds˺ it has brought along

فَلَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِٱلۡخُنَّسِ15

Ayah 15

Translation of the meaningI do swear by the receding stars

ٱلۡجَوَارِ ٱلۡكُنَّسِ16

Ayah 16

Translation of the meaningwhich travel and hide

وَٱلَّيۡلِ إِذَا عَسۡعَسَ17

Ayah 17

Translation of the meaningand the night as it falls

وَٱلصُّبۡحِ إِذَا تَنَفَّسَ18

Ayah 18

Translation of the meaningand the day as it breaks

إِنَّهُۥ لَقَوۡلُ رَسُولࣲ كَرِيمࣲ‏19

Ayah 19

Translation of the meaningIndeed, this ˹Quran˺ is the Word of ˹Allah delivered by Gabriel,˺ a noble messenger-angel

ذِي قُوَّةٍ عِندَ ذِي ٱلۡعَرۡشِ مَكِينࣲ‏20

Ayah 20

Translation of the meaningfull of power, held in honour by the Lord of the Throne

مُّطَاعࣲ ثَمَّ أَمِينࣲ‏21

Ayah 21

Translation of the meaningobeyed there ˹in heaven˺, and trustworthy

وَمَا صَاحِبُكُم بِمَجۡنُونࣲ‏22

Ayah 22

Translation of the meaningAnd your fellow man is not insane

وَلَقَدۡ رَءَاهُ بِٱلۡأُفُقِ ٱلۡمُبِينِ23

Ayah 23

Translation of the meaningAnd he did see that ˹angel˺ on the clear horizon

وَمَا هُوَ عَلَى ٱلۡغَيۡبِ بِضَنِينࣲ‏24

Ayah 24

Translation of the meaningand he does not withhold ˹what is revealed to him of˺ the unseen

وَمَا هُوَ بِقَوۡلِ شَيۡطَٰنࣲ رَّجِيمࣲ‏25

Ayah 25

Translation of the meaningAnd this ˹Quran˺ is not the word of an outcast devil

فَأَيۡنَ تَذۡهَبُونَ26

Ayah 26

Translation of the meaningSo what ˹other˺ path would you take

إِنۡ هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكۡرࣱ لِّلۡعَٰلَمِينَ27

Ayah 27

Translation of the meaningSurely this ˹Quran˺ is only a reminder to the whole world—

لِمَن شَآءَ مِنكُمۡ أَن يَسۡتَقِيمَ28

Ayah 28

Translation of the meaningto whoever of you wills to take the Straight Way

وَمَا تَشَآءُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّ ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ29

Ayah 29

Translation of the meaningBut you cannot will ˹to do so˺, except by the Will of Allah, the Lord of all worlds
