He frowned

عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ1

Ayah 1

Translation of the meaningHe frowned and turned ˹his attention˺ away

أَن جَآءَهُ ٱلۡأَعۡمَىٰ2

Ayah 2

Translation of the meaning˹simply˺ because the blind man came to him ˹interrupting˺

وَمَا يُدۡرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُۥ يَزَّكَّىٰٓ3

Ayah 3

Translation of the meaningYou never know ˹O Prophet˺, perhaps he may be purified

أَوۡ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنفَعَهُ ٱلذِّكۡرَىٰٓ4

Ayah 4

Translation of the meaningor he may be mindful, benefitting from the reminder

أَمَّا مَنِ ٱسۡتَغۡنَىٰ5

Ayah 5

Translation of the meaningAs for the one who was indifferent

فَأَنتَ لَهُۥ تَصَدَّىٰ6

Ayah 6

Translation of the meaningyou gave him your ˹undivided˺ attention

وَمَا عَلَيۡكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكَّىٰ7

Ayah 7

Translation of the meaningeven though you are not to blame if he would not be purified

وَأَمَّا مَن جَآءَكَ يَسۡعَىٰ8

Ayah 8

Translation of the meaningBut as for the one who came to you, eager ˹to learn˺

وَهُوَ يَخۡشَىٰ9

Ayah 9

Translation of the meaningbeing in awe ˹of Allah˺

فَأَنتَ عَنۡهُ تَلَهَّىٰ10

Ayah 10

Translation of the meaningyou were inattentive to him

كَلَّآ إِنَّهَا تَذۡكِرَةࣱ‏11

Ayah 11

Translation of the meaningBut no! This ˹revelation˺ is truly a reminder

فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ12

Ayah 12

Translation of the meaningSo let whoever wills be mindful of it

فِي صُحُفࣲ مُّكَرَّمَةࣲ‏13

Ayah 13

Translation of the meaningIt is ˹written˺ on pages held in honour—

مَّرۡفُوعَةࣲ مُّطَهَّرَةِۭ14

Ayah 14

Translation of the meaninghighly esteemed, purified—

بِأَيۡدِي سَفَرَةࣲ‏15

Ayah 15

Translation of the meaningby the hands of angel-scribes

كِرَامِۭ بَرَرَةࣲ‏16

Ayah 16

Translation of the meaninghonourable and virtuous

قُتِلَ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ مَآ أَكۡفَرَهُۥ17

Ayah 17

Translation of the meaningCondemned are ˹disbelieving˺ humans! How ungrateful they are ˹to Allah˺

مِنۡ أَيِّ شَيۡءٍ خَلَقَهُۥ18

Ayah 18

Translation of the meaningFrom what substance did He create them

مِن نُّطۡفَةٍ خَلَقَهُۥ فَقَدَّرَهُۥ19

Ayah 19

Translation of the meaningHe created them from a sperm-drop, and ordained their development

ثُمَّ ٱلسَّبِيلَ يَسَّرَهُۥ20

Ayah 20

Translation of the meaningThen He makes the way easy for them

ثُمَّ أَمَاتَهُۥ فَأَقۡبَرَهُۥ21

Ayah 21

Translation of the meaningthen causes them to die and be buried

ثُمَّ إِذَا شَآءَ أَنشَرَهُۥ22

Ayah 22

Translation of the meaningThen when He wills, He will resurrect them

كَلَّا لَمَّا يَقۡضِ مَآ أَمَرَهُۥ23

Ayah 23

Translation of the meaningBut no! They have failed to comply with what He ordered

فَلۡيَنظُرِ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ إِلَىٰ طَعَامِهِۦٓ24

Ayah 24

Translation of the meaningLet people then consider their food

أَنَّا صَبَبۡنَا ٱلۡمَآءَ صَبࣰّ ا25

Ayah 25

Translation of the meaninghow We pour down rain in abundance

ثُمَّ شَقَقۡنَا ٱلۡأَرۡضَ شَقࣰّ ا26

Ayah 26

Translation of the meaningand meticulously split the earth open ˹for sprouts˺

فَأَنۢبَتۡنَا فِيهَا حَبࣰّ ا27

Ayah 27

Translation of the meaningcausing grain to grow in it

وَعِنَبࣰ ا وَقَضۡبࣰ ا28

Ayah 28

Translation of the meaningas well as grapes and greens

وَزَيۡتُونࣰ ا وَنَخۡلࣰ ا29

Ayah 29

Translation of the meaningand olives and palm trees

وَحَدَآئِقَ غُلۡبࣰ ا30

Ayah 30

Translation of the meaningand dense orchards

وَفَٰكِهَةࣰ وَأَبࣰّ ا31

Ayah 31

Translation of the meaningand fruit and fodder—

مَّتَٰعࣰ ا لَّكُمۡ وَلِأَنۡعَٰمِكُمۡ32

Ayah 32

Translation of the meaningall as ˹a means of˺ sustenance for you and your animals

فَإِذَا جَآءَتِ ٱلصَّآخَّةُ33

Ayah 33

Translation of the meaningThen, when the Deafening Blast comes to pass—

يَوۡمَ يَفِرُّ ٱلۡمَرۡءُ مِنۡ أَخِيهِ34

Ayah 34

Translation of the meaningon that Day every person will flee from their own siblings

وَأُمِّهِۦ وَأَبِيهِ35

Ayah 35

Translation of the meaningand ˹even˺ their mother and father

وَصَٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَبَنِيهِ36

Ayah 36

Translation of the meaningand ˹even˺ their spouse and children

لِكُلِّ ٱمۡرِيࣲٕ مِّنۡهُمۡ يَوۡمَئِذࣲ شَأۡنࣱ يُغۡنِيهِ37

Ayah 37

Translation of the meaningFor then everyone will have enough concern of their own

وُجُوهࣱ يَوۡمَئِذࣲ مُّسۡفِرَةࣱ‏38

Ayah 38

Translation of the meaningOn that Day ˹some˺ faces will be bright

ضَاحِكَةࣱ مُّسۡتَبۡشِرَةࣱ‏39

Ayah 39

Translation of the meaninglaughing and rejoicing

وَوُجُوهࣱ يَوۡمَئِذٍ عَلَيۡهَا غَبَرَةࣱ‏40

Ayah 40

Translation of the meaningwhile ˹other˺ faces will be dusty

تَرۡهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌ41

Ayah 41

Translation of the meaningcast in gloom—

أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلۡكَفَرَةُ ٱلۡفَجَرَةُ42

Ayah 42

Translation of the meaningthose are the disbelievers, the ˹wicked˺ sinners
