ٱقۡتَرَبَتِ ٱلسَّاعَةُ وَٱنشَقَّ ٱلۡقَمَرُ
Ayah 1
Translation of the meaningThe Hour has drawn near and the moon was split ˹in two˺
سُوْرَةُ الْقَمَرِ
Surah 54verses 55 Revealed in MeccanJuz 27–27
بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
ٱقۡتَرَبَتِ ٱلسَّاعَةُ وَٱنشَقَّ ٱلۡقَمَرُ
Ayah 1
Translation of the meaningThe Hour has drawn near and the moon was split ˹in two˺
وَإِن يَرَوۡاْ ءَايَةࣰ يُعۡرِضُواْ وَيَقُولُواْ سِحۡرࣱ مُّسۡتَمِرࣱّ
Ayah 2
Translation of the meaningYet, whenever they see a sign, they turn away, saying, “Same old magic!”
وَكَذَّبُواْ وَٱتَّبَعُوٓاْ أَهۡوَآءَهُمۡۚ وَكُلُّ أَمۡرࣲ مُّسۡتَقِرࣱّ
Ayah 3
Translation of the meaningThey rejected ˹the truth˺ and followed their own desires—and every matter will be settled—
وَلَقَدۡ جَآءَهُم مِّنَ ٱلۡأَنۢبَآءِ مَا فِيهِ مُزۡدَجَرٌ
Ayah 4
Translation of the meaningeven though the stories ˹of destroyed nations˺ that have already come to them are a sufficient deterrent
حِكۡمَةُۢ بَٰلِغَةࣱۖ فَمَا تُغۡنِ ٱلنُّذُرُ
Ayah 5
Translation of the meaning˹This Quran is˺ profound ˹in˺ wisdom, but warnings are of no benefit ˹to them˺
فَتَوَلَّ عَنۡهُمۡۘ يَوۡمَ يَدۡعُ ٱلدَّاعِ إِلَىٰ شَيۡءࣲ نُّكُرٍ
Ayah 6
Translation of the meaningSo turn away from them ˹O Prophet˺. ˹And wait for˺ the Day ˹when˺ the caller will summon ˹them˺ for something horrifying
خُشَّعًا أَبۡصَٰرُهُمۡ يَخۡرُجُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡأَجۡدَاثِ كَأَنَّهُمۡ جَرَادࣱ مُّنتَشِرࣱ
Ayah 7
Translation of the meaningWith eyes downcast, they will come forth from the graves as if they were swarming locusts
مُّهۡطِعِينَ إِلَى ٱلدَّاعِۖ يَقُولُ ٱلۡكَٰفِرُونَ هَٰذَا يَوۡمٌ عَسِرࣱ
Ayah 8
Translation of the meaningrushing towards the caller. The disbelievers will cry, “This is a difficult Day!”
۞كَذَّبَتۡ قَبۡلَهُمۡ قَوۡمُ نُوحࣲ فَكَذَّبُواْ عَبۡدَنَا وَقَالُواْ مَجۡنُونࣱ وَٱزۡدُجِرَ
Ayah 9
Translation of the meaningBefore them, the people of Noah denied ˹the truth˺ and rejected Our servant, calling ˹him˺ insane. And he was intimidated
فَدَعَا رَبَّهُۥٓ أَنِّي مَغۡلُوبࣱ فَٱنتَصِرۡ
Ayah 10
Translation of the meaningSo he cried out to his Lord, “I am helpless, so help ˹me˺!”
فَفَتَحۡنَآ أَبۡوَٰبَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ بِمَآءࣲ مُّنۡهَمِرࣲ
Ayah 11
Translation of the meaningSo We opened the gates of the sky with pouring rain
وَفَجَّرۡنَا ٱلۡأَرۡضَ عُيُونࣰ ا فَٱلۡتَقَى ٱلۡمَآءُ عَلَىٰٓ أَمۡرࣲ قَدۡ قُدِرَ
Ayah 12
Translation of the meaningand caused the earth to burst with springs, so the waters met for a fate already set
وَحَمَلۡنَٰهُ عَلَىٰ ذَاتِ أَلۡوَٰحࣲ وَدُسُرࣲ
Ayah 13
Translation of the meaningWe carried him on that ˹Ark made˺ of planks and nails
تَجۡرِي بِأَعۡيُنِنَا جَزَآءࣰ لِّمَن كَانَ كُفِرَ
Ayah 14
Translation of the meaningsailing under Our ˹watchful˺ Eyes—a ˹fair˺ punishment on behalf of the one ˹they˺ denied
وَلَقَد تَّرَكۡنَٰهَآ ءَايَةࣰ فَهَلۡ مِن مُّدَّكِرࣲ
Ayah 15
Translation of the meaningWe certainly left this as a sign. So is there anyone who will be mindful
فَكَيۡفَ كَانَ عَذَابِي وَنُذُرِ
Ayah 16
Translation of the meaningThen how ˹dreadful˺ were My punishment and warnings
وَلَقَدۡ يَسَّرۡنَا ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ لِلذِّكۡرِ فَهَلۡ مِن مُّدَّكِرࣲ
Ayah 17
Translation of the meaningAnd We have certainly made the Quran easy to remember. So is there anyone who will be mindful
كَذَّبَتۡ عَادࣱ فَكَيۡفَ كَانَ عَذَابِي وَنُذُرِ
Ayah 18
Translation of the meaning’Ȃd ˹also˺ rejected ˹the truth˺. Then how ˹dreadful˺ were My punishment and warnings
إِنَّآ أَرۡسَلۡنَا عَلَيۡهِمۡ رِيحࣰ ا صَرۡصَرࣰ ا فِي يَوۡمِ نَحۡسࣲ مُّسۡتَمِرࣲّ
Ayah 19
Translation of the meaningIndeed, We sent against them a furious wind, on a day of unrelenting misery
تَنزِعُ ٱلنَّاسَ كَأَنَّهُمۡ أَعۡجَازُ نَخۡلࣲ مُّنقَعِرࣲ
Ayah 20
Translation of the meaningthat snatched people up, leaving them like trunks of uprooted palm trees
فَكَيۡفَ كَانَ عَذَابِي وَنُذُرِ
Ayah 21
Translation of the meaningThen how ˹dreadful˺ were My punishment and warnings
وَلَقَدۡ يَسَّرۡنَا ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ لِلذِّكۡرِ فَهَلۡ مِن مُّدَّكِرࣲ
Ayah 22
Translation of the meaningAnd We have certainly made the Quran easy to remember. So is there anyone who will be mindful
كَذَّبَتۡ ثَمُودُ بِٱلنُّذُرِ
Ayah 23
Translation of the meaningThamûd rejected the warnings ˹as well˺
فَقَالُوٓاْ أَبَشَرࣰ ا مِّنَّا وَٰحِدࣰ ا نَّتَّبِعُهُۥٓ إِنَّآ إِذࣰ ا لَّفِي ضَلَٰلࣲ وَسُعُرٍ
Ayah 24
Translation of the meaningarguing, “How can we follow one ˹average˺ human being from among us? We would then truly be misguided and insane
أَءُلۡقِيَ ٱلذِّكۡرُ عَلَيۡهِ مِنۢ بَيۡنِنَا بَلۡ هُوَ كَذَّابٌ أَشِرࣱ
Ayah 25
Translation of the meaningHas the revelation been sent down ˹only˺ to him out of ˹all of˺ us? In fact, he is a boastful liar.”
سَيَعۡلَمُونَ غَدࣰ ا مَّنِ ٱلۡكَذَّابُ ٱلۡأَشِرُ
Ayah 26
Translation of the meaning˹It was revealed to Ṣâliḥ,˺ “They will soon know who the boastful liar is
إِنَّا مُرۡسِلُواْ ٱلنَّاقَةِ فِتۡنَةࣰ لَّهُمۡ فَٱرۡتَقِبۡهُمۡ وَٱصۡطَبِرۡ
Ayah 27
Translation of the meaningWe are sending the she-camel as a test for them. So watch them ˹closely˺, and have patience
وَنَبِّئۡهُمۡ أَنَّ ٱلۡمَآءَ قِسۡمَةُۢ بَيۡنَهُمۡۖ كُلُّ شِرۡبࣲ مُّحۡتَضَرࣱ
Ayah 28
Translation of the meaningAnd tell them that the ˹drinking˺ water must be divided between them ˹and her˺, each taking a turn to drink ˹every other day˺.”
فَنَادَوۡاْ صَاحِبَهُمۡ فَتَعَاطَىٰ فَعَقَرَ
Ayah 29
Translation of the meaningBut they roused a companion of theirs, so he dared to kill ˹her˺
فَكَيۡفَ كَانَ عَذَابِي وَنُذُرِ
Ayah 30
Translation of the meaningThen how ˹dreadful˺ were My punishment and warnings
إِنَّآ أَرۡسَلۡنَا عَلَيۡهِمۡ صَيۡحَةࣰ وَٰحِدَةࣰ فَكَانُواْ كَهَشِيمِ ٱلۡمُحۡتَظِرِ
Ayah 31
Translation of the meaningIndeed, We sent against them ˹only˺ one ˹mighty˺ blast, leaving them like the twigs of fence-builders
وَلَقَدۡ يَسَّرۡنَا ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ لِلذِّكۡرِ فَهَلۡ مِن مُّدَّكِرࣲ
Ayah 32
Translation of the meaningAnd We have certainly made the Quran easy to remember. So is there anyone who will be mindful
كَذَّبَتۡ قَوۡمُ لُوطِۭ بِٱلنُّذُرِ
Ayah 33
Translation of the meaningThe people of Lot ˹also˺ rejected the warnings
إِنَّآ أَرۡسَلۡنَا عَلَيۡهِمۡ حَاصِبًا إِلَّآ ءَالَ لُوطࣲۖ نَّجَّيۡنَٰهُم بِسَحَرࣲ
Ayah 34
Translation of the meaningWe unleashed upon them a storm of stones. As for ˹the believers of˺ Lot’s family, We delivered them before dawn
نِّعۡمَةࣰ مِّنۡ عِندِنَاۚ كَذَٰلِكَ نَجۡزِي مَن شَكَرَ
Ayah 35
Translation of the meaningas a blessing from Us. This is how We reward whoever gives thanks
وَلَقَدۡ أَنذَرَهُم بَطۡشَتَنَا فَتَمَارَوۡاْ بِٱلنُّذُرِ
Ayah 36
Translation of the meaningHe had already warned them of Our ˹crushing˺ blow but they disputed the warnings
وَلَقَدۡ رَٰوَدُوهُ عَن ضَيۡفِهِۦ فَطَمَسۡنَآ أَعۡيُنَهُمۡ فَذُوقُواْ عَذَابِي وَنُذُرِ
Ayah 37
Translation of the meaningAnd they even demanded his angel-guests from him, so We blinded their eyes. ˹And they were told,˺ “Taste then My punishment and warnings!”
وَلَقَدۡ صَبَّحَهُم بُكۡرَةً عَذَابࣱ مُّسۡتَقِرࣱّ
Ayah 38
Translation of the meaningAnd indeed, by the early morning they were overwhelmed by an unrelenting torment
فَذُوقُواْ عَذَابِي وَنُذُرِ
Ayah 39
Translation of the meaning˹Again they were told,˺ “Taste now My punishment and warnings!”
وَلَقَدۡ يَسَّرۡنَا ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ لِلذِّكۡرِ فَهَلۡ مِن مُّدَّكِرࣲ
Ayah 40
Translation of the meaningAnd We have certainly made the Quran easy to remember. So is there anyone who will be mindful
وَلَقَدۡ جَآءَ ءَالَ فِرۡعَوۡنَ ٱلنُّذُرُ
Ayah 41
Translation of the meaningAnd indeed, the warnings ˹also˺ came to the people of Pharaoh
كَذَّبُواْ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا كُلِّهَا فَأَخَذۡنَٰهُمۡ أَخۡذَ عَزِيزࣲ مُّقۡتَدِرٍ
Ayah 42
Translation of the meaning˹But˺ they rejected all of Our signs, so We seized them with the ˹crushing˺ grip of the Almighty, Most Powerful
أَكُفَّارُكُمۡ خَيۡرࣱ مِّنۡ أُوْلَٰٓئِكُمۡ أَمۡ لَكُم بَرَآءَةࣱ فِي ٱلزُّبُرِ
Ayah 43
Translation of the meaningNow, are you ˹Meccan˺ disbelievers superior to those ˹destroyed peoples˺? Or have you ˹been granted˺ immunity ˹from punishment˺ in divine Books
أَمۡ يَقُولُونَ نَحۡنُ جَمِيعࣱ مُّنتَصِرࣱ
Ayah 44
Translation of the meaningOr do they say, “We are all ˹a˺ united ˹front˺, bound to prevail.”
سَيُهۡزَمُ ٱلۡجَمۡعُ وَيُوَلُّونَ ٱلدُّبُرَ
Ayah 45
Translation of the meaning˹Soon˺ their united front will be defeated and ˹forced to˺ flee
بَلِ ٱلسَّاعَةُ مَوۡعِدُهُمۡ وَٱلسَّاعَةُ أَدۡهَىٰ وَأَمَرُّ
Ayah 46
Translation of the meaningBetter yet, the Hour is their appointed time—and the Hour will be most catastrophic and most bitter
إِنَّ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِينَ فِي ضَلَٰلࣲ وَسُعُرࣲ
Ayah 47
Translation of the meaningIndeed, the wicked are ˹entrenched˺ in misguidance, and ˹are bound for˺ blazes
يَوۡمَ يُسۡحَبُونَ فِي ٱلنَّارِ عَلَىٰ وُجُوهِهِمۡ ذُوقُواْ مَسَّ سَقَرَ
Ayah 48
Translation of the meaningOn the Day they will be dragged into the Fire on their faces, ˹they will be told,˺ “Taste the touch of Hell!”
إِنَّا كُلَّ شَيۡءٍ خَلَقۡنَٰهُ بِقَدَرࣲ
Ayah 49
Translation of the meaningIndeed, We have created everything, perfectly preordained
وَمَآ أَمۡرُنَآ إِلَّا وَٰحِدَةࣱ كَلَمۡحِۭ بِٱلۡبَصَرِ
Ayah 50
Translation of the meaningOur command is but a single word, done in the blink of an eye
وَلَقَدۡ أَهۡلَكۡنَآ أَشۡيَاعَكُمۡ فَهَلۡ مِن مُّدَّكِرࣲ
Ayah 51
Translation of the meaningWe have already destroyed the likes of you. So will any ˹of you˺ be mindful
وَكُلُّ شَيۡءࣲ فَعَلُوهُ فِي ٱلزُّبُرِ
Ayah 52
Translation of the meaningEverything they have done is ˹listed˺ in ˹their˺ records
وَكُلُّ صَغِيرࣲ وَكَبِيرࣲ مُّسۡتَطَرٌ
Ayah 53
Translation of the meaningEvery matter, small and large, is written ˹precisely˺
إِنَّ ٱلۡمُتَّقِينَ فِي جَنَّٰتࣲ وَنَهَرࣲ
Ayah 54
Translation of the meaningIndeed, the righteous will be amid Gardens and rivers
فِي مَقۡعَدِ صِدۡقٍ عِندَ مَلِيكࣲ مُّقۡتَدِرِۭ
Ayah 55
Translation of the meaningat the Seat of Honour in the presence of the Most Powerful Sovereign
