Surah 53verses 62 Revealed in MeccanJuz 27–27

بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

53:1

وَٱلنَّجۡمِ إِذَا هَوَىٰ

Translation of the meaningBy the stars when they fade away

53:2

مَا ضَلَّ صَاحِبُكُمۡ وَمَا غَوَىٰ

Translation of the meaningYour fellow man is neither misguided nor astray

53:3

وَمَا يَنطِقُ عَنِ ٱلۡهَوَىٰٓ

Translation of the meaningNor does he speak of his own whims

53:4

إِنۡ هُوَ إِلَّا وَحۡيࣱ يُوحَىٰ

Translation of the meaningIt is only a revelation sent down ˹to him˺

53:5

عَلَّمَهُۥ شَدِيدُ ٱلۡقُوَىٰ

Translation of the meaningHe has been taught by one ˹angel˺ of mighty power

53:6

ذُو مِرَّةࣲ فَٱسۡتَوَىٰ

Translation of the meaningand great perfection, who once rose to ˹his˺ true form

53:7

وَهُوَ بِٱلۡأُفُقِ ٱلۡأَعۡلَىٰ

Translation of the meaningwhile on the highest point above the horizon

53:8

ثُمَّ دَنَا فَتَدَلَّىٰ

Translation of the meaningthen he approached ˹the Prophet˺, coming so close

53:9

فَكَانَ قَابَ قَوۡسَيۡنِ أَوۡ أَدۡنَىٰ

Translation of the meaningthat he was only two arms-lengths away or even less

53:10

فَأَوۡحَىٰٓ إِلَىٰ عَبۡدِهِۦ مَآ أَوۡحَىٰ

Translation of the meaningThen Allah revealed to His servant what He revealed ˹through Gabriel˺

53:11

مَا كَذَبَ ٱلۡفُؤَادُ مَا رَأَىٰٓ

Translation of the meaningThe ˹Prophet’s˺ heart did not doubt what he saw

53:12

أَفَتُمَٰرُونَهُۥ عَلَىٰ مَا يَرَىٰ

Translation of the meaningHow can you ˹O pagans˺ then dispute with him regarding what he saw

53:13

وَلَقَدۡ رَءَاهُ نَزۡلَةً أُخۡرَىٰ

Translation of the meaningAnd he certainly saw that ˹angel descend˺ a second time

53:14

عِندَ سِدۡرَةِ ٱلۡمُنتَهَىٰ

Translation of the meaningat the Lote Tree of the most extreme limit ˹in the seventh heaven˺—

53:15

عِندَهَا جَنَّةُ ٱلۡمَأۡوَىٰٓ

Translation of the meaningnear which is the Garden of ˹Eternal˺ Residence—

53:16

إِذۡ يَغۡشَى ٱلسِّدۡرَةَ مَا يَغۡشَىٰ

Translation of the meaningwhile the Lote Tree was overwhelmed with ˹heavenly˺ splendours

53:17

مَا زَاغَ ٱلۡبَصَرُ وَمَا طَغَىٰ

Translation of the meaningThe ˹Prophet’s˺ sight never wandered, nor did it overreach

53:18

لَقَدۡ رَأَىٰ مِنۡ ءَايَٰتِ رَبِّهِ ٱلۡكُبۡرَىٰٓ

Translation of the meaningHe certainly saw some of his Lord’s greatest signs

53:19

أَفَرَءَيۡتُمُ ٱللَّٰتَ وَٱلۡعُزَّىٰ

Translation of the meaningNow, have you considered ˹the idols of˺ Lât and ’Uzza

53:20

وَمَنَوٰةَ ٱلثَّالِثَةَ ٱلۡأُخۡرَىٰٓ

Translation of the meaningand the third one, Manât, as well

53:21

أَلَكُمُ ٱلذَّكَرُ وَلَهُ ٱلۡأُنثَىٰ

Translation of the meaningDo you ˹prefer to˺ have sons while ˹you attribute˺ to Him daughters

53:22

تِلۡكَ إِذࣰ ا قِسۡمَةࣱ ضِيزَىٰٓ

Translation of the meaningThen this is ˹truly˺ a biased distribution

53:23

إِنۡ هِيَ إِلَّآ أَسۡمَآءࣱ سَمَّيۡتُمُوهَآ أَنتُمۡ وَءَابَآؤُكُم مَّآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَا مِن سُلۡطَٰنٍۚ إِن يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ وَمَا تَهۡوَى ٱلۡأَنفُسُۖ وَلَقَدۡ جَآءَهُم مِّن رَّبِّهِمُ ٱلۡهُدَىٰٓ

Translation of the meaningThese ˹idols˺ are mere names that you and your forefathers have made up—a practice Allah has never authorized. They follow nothing but ˹inherited˺ assumptions and whatever ˹their˺ souls desire, although ˹true˺ guidance has already come to them from their Lord

53:24

أَمۡ لِلۡإِنسَٰنِ مَا تَمَنَّىٰ

Translation of the meaningOr should every person ˹simply˺ have whatever ˹intercessors˺ they desire

53:25

فَلِلَّهِ ٱلۡأٓخِرَةُ وَٱلۡأُولَىٰ

Translation of the meaningIn fact, to Allah ˹alone˺ belongs this world and the next

53:26

۞وَكَم مِّن مَّلَكࣲ فِي ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ لَا تُغۡنِي شَفَٰعَتُهُمۡ شَيۡـًٔا إِلَّا مِنۢ بَعۡدِ أَن يَأۡذَنَ ٱللَّهُ لِمَن يَشَآءُ وَيَرۡضَىٰٓ

Translation of the meaning˹Imagine˺ how many ˹noble˺ angels are in the heavens! ˹Even˺ their intercession would be of no benefit whatsoever, until Allah gives permission to whoever He wills and ˹only for the people He˺ approves

53:27

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يُؤۡمِنُونَ بِٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ لَيُسَمُّونَ ٱلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةَ تَسۡمِيَةَ ٱلۡأُنثَىٰ

Translation of the meaningIndeed, those who do not believe in the Hereafter label angels as female

53:28

وَمَا لَهُم بِهِۦ مِنۡ عِلۡمٍۖ إِن يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّۖ وَإِنَّ ٱلظَّنَّ لَا يُغۡنِي مِنَ ٱلۡحَقِّ شَيۡـࣰٔ ا

Translation of the meaningalthough they have no knowledge ˹in support˺ of this. They follow nothing but ˹inherited˺ assumptions. And surely assumptions can in no way replace the truth

53:29

فَأَعۡرِضۡ عَن مَّن تَوَلَّىٰ عَن ذِكۡرِنَا وَلَمۡ يُرِدۡ إِلَّا ٱلۡحَيَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنۡيَا

Translation of the meaningSo turn away ˹O Prophet˺ from whoever has shunned Our Reminder, only seeking the ˹fleeting˺ life of this world

53:30

ذَٰلِكَ مَبۡلَغُهُم مِّنَ ٱلۡعِلۡمِۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَن ضَلَّ عَن سَبِيلِهِۦ وَهُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَنِ ٱهۡتَدَىٰ

Translation of the meaningThis is the extent of their knowledge. Surely your Lord knows best who has strayed from His Way and who is ˹rightly˺ guided

53:31

وَلِلَّهِ مَا فِي ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ لِيَجۡزِيَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَسَٰٓـُٔواْ بِمَا عَمِلُواْ وَيَجۡزِيَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَحۡسَنُواْ بِٱلۡحُسۡنَى

Translation of the meaningTo Allah ˹alone˺ belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth so that He may reward the evildoers according to what they did, and reward the good-doers with the finest reward—

53:32

ٱلَّذِينَ يَجۡتَنِبُونَ كَبَٰٓئِرَ ٱلۡإِثۡمِ وَٱلۡفَوَٰحِشَ إِلَّا ٱللَّمَمَۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ وَٰسِعُ ٱلۡمَغۡفِرَةِۚ هُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِكُمۡ إِذۡ أَنشَأَكُم مِّنَ ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَإِذۡ أَنتُمۡ أَجِنَّةࣱ فِي بُطُونِ أُمَّهَٰتِكُمۡۖ فَلَا تُزَكُّوٓاْ أَنفُسَكُمۡۖ هُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَنِ ٱتَّقَىٰٓ

Translation of the meaningthose who avoid major sins and shameful deeds, despite ˹stumbling on˺ minor sins. Surely your Lord is infinite in forgiveness. He knew well what would become of you as He created you from the earth and while you were ˹still˺ fetuses in the wombs of your mothers. So do not ˹falsely˺ elevate yourselves. He knows best who is ˹truly˺ righteous

53:33

أَفَرَءَيۡتَ ٱلَّذِي تَوَلَّىٰ

Translation of the meaningHave you seen the one who turned away ˹from Islam,˺

53:34

وَأَعۡطَىٰ قَلِيلࣰ ا وَأَكۡدَىٰٓ

Translation of the meaningand ˹initially˺ paid a little ˹for his salvation˺, and then stopped

53:35

أَعِندَهُۥ عِلۡمُ ٱلۡغَيۡبِ فَهُوَ يَرَىٰٓ

Translation of the meaningDoes he have the knowledge of the unseen so that he sees ˹the Hereafter˺

53:36

أَمۡ لَمۡ يُنَبَّأۡ بِمَا فِي صُحُفِ مُوسَىٰ

Translation of the meaningOr has he not been informed of what is in the Scripture of Moses

53:37

وَإِبۡرَٰهِيمَ ٱلَّذِي وَفَّىٰٓ

Translation of the meaningand ˹that of˺ Abraham, who ˹perfectly˺ fulfilled ˹his covenant˺

53:38

أَلَّا تَزِرُ وَازِرَةࣱ وِزۡرَ أُخۡرَىٰ

Translation of the meaning˹They state˺ that no soul burdened with sin will bear the burden of another

53:39

وَأَن لَّيۡسَ لِلۡإِنسَٰنِ إِلَّا مَا سَعَىٰ

Translation of the meaningand that each person will only have what they endeavoured towards

53:40

وَأَنَّ سَعۡيَهُۥ سَوۡفَ يُرَىٰ

Translation of the meaningand that ˹the outcome of˺ their endeavours will be seen ˹in their record˺

53:41

ثُمَّ يُجۡزَىٰهُ ٱلۡجَزَآءَ ٱلۡأَوۡفَىٰ

Translation of the meaningthen they will be fully rewarded

53:42

وَأَنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ ٱلۡمُنتَهَىٰ

Translation of the meaningand that to your Lord ˹alone˺ is the ultimate return ˹of all things˺

53:43

وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَضۡحَكَ وَأَبۡكَىٰ

Translation of the meaningMoreover, He is the One Who brings about joy and sadness

53:44

وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَمَاتَ وَأَحۡيَا

Translation of the meaningAnd He is the One Who gives life and causes death

53:45

وَأَنَّهُۥ خَلَقَ ٱلزَّوۡجَيۡنِ ٱلذَّكَرَ وَٱلۡأُنثَىٰ

Translation of the meaningAnd He created the pairs—males and females—

53:46

مِن نُّطۡفَةٍ إِذَا تُمۡنَىٰ

Translation of the meaningfrom a sperm-drop when it is emitted

53:47

وَأَنَّ عَلَيۡهِ ٱلنَّشۡأَةَ ٱلۡأُخۡرَىٰ

Translation of the meaningAnd it is upon Him to bring about re-creation

53:48

وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَغۡنَىٰ وَأَقۡنَىٰ

Translation of the meaningAnd He is the One Who enriches and impoverishes

53:49

وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ رَبُّ ٱلشِّعۡرَىٰ

Translation of the meaningAnd He alone is the Lord of Sirius

53:50

وَأَنَّهُۥٓ أَهۡلَكَ عَادًا ٱلۡأُولَىٰ

Translation of the meaningAnd He destroyed the first ˹people of˺ ’Ȃd

53:51

وَثَمُودَاْ فَمَآ أَبۡقَىٰ

Translation of the meaningand ˹then˺ Thamûd, sparing no one

53:52

وَقَوۡمَ نُوحࣲ مِّن قَبۡلُۖ إِنَّهُمۡ كَانُواْ هُمۡ أَظۡلَمَ وَأَطۡغَىٰ

Translation of the meaningAnd before ˹that He destroyed˺ the people of Noah, who were truly far worse in wrongdoing and transgression

53:53

وَٱلۡمُؤۡتَفِكَةَ أَهۡوَىٰ

Translation of the meaningAnd ˹it was˺ He ˹Who˺ turned the cities ˹of Sodom and Gomorrah˺ upside down

53:54

فَغَشَّىٰهَا مَا غَشَّىٰ

Translation of the meaningHow overwhelming was what covered ˹them˺

53:55

فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكَ تَتَمَارَىٰ

Translation of the meaningNow, which of your Lord’s favours will you dispute

53:56

هَٰذَا نَذِيرࣱ مِّنَ ٱلنُّذُرِ ٱلۡأُولَىٰٓ

Translation of the meaningThis ˹Prophet˺ is a warner like earlier ones

53:57

أَزِفَتِ ٱلۡأٓزِفَةُ

Translation of the meaningThe approaching ˹Hour˺ has drawn near

53:58

لَيۡسَ لَهَا مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ كَاشِفَةٌ

Translation of the meaningNone but Allah can disclose it

53:59

أَفَمِنۡ هَٰذَا ٱلۡحَدِيثِ تَعۡجَبُونَ

Translation of the meaningDo you find this revelation astonishing

53:60

وَتَضۡحَكُونَ وَلَا تَبۡكُونَ

Translation of the meaninglaughing ˹at it˺ and not weeping ˹in awe˺

53:61

وَأَنتُمۡ سَٰمِدُونَ

Translation of the meaningwhile persisting in heedlessness

53:62

فَٱسۡجُدُواْۤ لِلَّهِۤ وَٱعۡبُدُواْ۩

Translation of the meaningInstead, prostrate to Allah and worship ˹Him alone˺
