The Sun

وَٱلشَّمۡسِ وَضُحَىٰهَا1

Ayah 1

Translation of the meaningBy the sun and its brightness

وَٱلۡقَمَرِ إِذَا تَلَىٰهَا2

Ayah 2

Translation of the meaningand the moon as it follows it

وَٱلنَّهَارِ إِذَا جَلَّىٰهَا3

Ayah 3

Translation of the meaningand the day as it unveils it

وَٱلَّيۡلِ إِذَا يَغۡشَىٰهَا4

Ayah 4

Translation of the meaningand the night as it conceals it

وَٱلسَّمَآءِ وَمَا بَنَىٰهَا5

Ayah 5

Translation of the meaningAnd by heaven and ˹the One˺ Who built it

وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَمَا طَحَىٰهَا6

Ayah 6

Translation of the meaningand the earth and ˹the One˺ Who spread it

وَنَفۡسࣲ وَمَا سَوَّىٰهَا7

Ayah 7

Translation of the meaningAnd by the soul and ˹the One˺ Who fashioned it

فَأَلۡهَمَهَا فُجُورَهَا وَتَقۡوَىٰهَا8

Ayah 8

Translation of the meaningthen with ˹the knowledge of˺ right and wrong inspired it

قَدۡ أَفۡلَحَ مَن زَكَّىٰهَا9

Ayah 9

Translation of the meaningSuccessful indeed is the one who purifies their soul

وَقَدۡ خَابَ مَن دَسَّىٰهَا10

Ayah 10

Translation of the meaningand doomed is the one who corrupts it

كَذَّبَتۡ ثَمُودُ بِطَغۡوَىٰهَآ11

Ayah 11

Translation of the meaningThamûd rejected ˹the truth˺ out of arrogance

إِذِ ٱنۢبَعَثَ أَشۡقَىٰهَا12

Ayah 12

Translation of the meaningwhen the most wicked of them was roused ˹to kill the she-camel˺

فَقَالَ لَهُمۡ رَسُولُ ٱللَّهِ نَاقَةَ ٱللَّهِ وَسُقۡيَٰهَا13

Ayah 13

Translation of the meaningBut the messenger of Allah warned them, “˹Do not disturb˺ Allah’s camel and her ˹turn to˺ drink!”

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَعَقَرُوهَا فَدَمۡدَمَ عَلَيۡهِمۡ رَبُّهُم بِذَنۢبِهِمۡ فَسَوَّىٰهَا14

Ayah 14

Translation of the meaningStill they defied him and slaughtered her. So their Lord crushed them for their crime, levelling all to the ground

وَلَا يَخَافُ عُقۡبَٰهَا15

Ayah 15

Translation of the meaningHe has no fear of consequences
