The Cloaked One

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلۡمُدَّثِّرُ1

Ayah 1

Translation of the meaningO you covered up ˹in your clothes˺

قُمۡ فَأَنذِرۡ2

Ayah 2

Translation of the meaningArise and warn ˹all˺

وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّرۡ3

Ayah 3

Translation of the meaningRevere your Lord ˹alone˺

وَثِيَابَكَ فَطَهِّرۡ4

Ayah 4

Translation of the meaningPurify your garments

وَٱلرُّجۡزَ فَٱهۡجُرۡ5

Ayah 5

Translation of the meaning˹Continue to˺ shun idols

وَلَا تَمۡنُن تَسۡتَكۡثِرُ6

Ayah 6

Translation of the meaningDo not do a favour expecting more ˹in return˺

وَلِرَبِّكَ فَٱصۡبِرۡ7

Ayah 7

Translation of the meaningAnd persevere for ˹the sake of˺ your Lord

فَإِذَا نُقِرَ فِي ٱلنَّاقُورِ8

Ayah 8

Translation of the meaning˹For˺ when the Trumpet will be sounded

فَذَٰلِكَ يَوۡمَئِذࣲ يَوۡمٌ عَسِيرٌ9

Ayah 9

Translation of the meaningthat will ˹truly˺ be a difficult Day—

عَلَى ٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَ غَيۡرُ يَسِيرࣲ‏10

Ayah 10

Translation of the meaningfar from easy for the disbelievers

ذَرۡنِي وَمَنۡ خَلَقۡتُ وَحِيدࣰ ا11

Ayah 11

Translation of the meaningAnd leave to me ˹O Prophet˺ the one I created all by Myself

وَجَعَلۡتُ لَهُۥ مَالࣰ ا مَّمۡدُودࣰ ا12

Ayah 12

Translation of the meaningand granted him abundant wealth

وَبَنِينَ شُهُودࣰ ا13

Ayah 13

Translation of the meaningand children always by his side

وَمَهَّدتُّ لَهُۥ تَمۡهِيدࣰ ا14

Ayah 14

Translation of the meaningand made life very easy for him

ثُمَّ يَطۡمَعُ أَنۡ أَزِيدَ15

Ayah 15

Translation of the meaningYet he is hungry for more

كَلَّآۖ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ لِأٓيَٰتِنَا عَنِيدࣰ ا16

Ayah 16

Translation of the meaningBut no! ˹For˺ he has been truly stubborn with Our revelations

سَأُرۡهِقُهُۥ صَعُودًا17

Ayah 17

Translation of the meaningI will make his fate unbearable

إِنَّهُۥ فَكَّرَ وَقَدَّرَ18

Ayah 18

Translation of the meaningfor he contemplated and determined ˹a degrading label for the Quran˺

فَقُتِلَ كَيۡفَ قَدَّرَ19

Ayah 19

Translation of the meaningMay he be condemned! How evil was what he determined

ثُمَّ قُتِلَ كَيۡفَ قَدَّرَ20

Ayah 20

Translation of the meaningMay he be condemned even more! How evil was what he determined

ثُمَّ نَظَرَ21

Ayah 21

Translation of the meaningThen he re-contemplated ˹in frustration˺

ثُمَّ عَبَسَ وَبَسَرَ22

Ayah 22

Translation of the meaningthen frowned and scowled

ثُمَّ أَدۡبَرَ وَٱسۡتَكۡبَرَ23

Ayah 23

Translation of the meaningthen turned his back ˹on the truth˺ and acted arrogantly

فَقَالَ إِنۡ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا سِحۡرࣱ يُؤۡثَرُ24

Ayah 24

Translation of the meaningsaying, “This ˹Quran˺ is nothing but magic from the ancients

إِنۡ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا قَوۡلُ ٱلۡبَشَرِ25

Ayah 25

Translation of the meaningThis is no more than the word of a man.”

سَأُصۡلِيهِ سَقَرَ26

Ayah 26

Translation of the meaningSoon I will burn him in Hell

وَمَآ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا سَقَرُ27

Ayah 27

Translation of the meaningAnd what will make you realize what Hell is

لَا تُبۡقِي وَلَا تَذَرُ28

Ayah 28

Translation of the meaningIt does not let anyone live or die

لَوَّاحَةࣱ لِّلۡبَشَرِ29

Ayah 29

Translation of the meaningscorching the skin

عَلَيۡهَا تِسۡعَةَ عَشَرَ30

Ayah 30

Translation of the meaningIt is overseen by nineteen ˹keepers˺

وَمَا جَعَلۡنَآ أَصۡحَٰبَ ٱلنَّارِ إِلَّا مَلَٰٓئِكَةࣰۖ وَمَا جَعَلۡنَا عِدَّتَهُمۡ إِلَّا فِتۡنَةࣰ لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ لِيَسۡتَيۡقِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُواْ ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ وَيَزۡدَادَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓاْ إِيمَٰنࣰ ا وَلَا يَرۡتَابَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُواْ ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ وَٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ وَلِيَقُولَ ٱلَّذِينَ فِي قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضࣱ وَٱلۡكَٰفِرُونَ مَاذَآ أَرَادَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَٰذَا مَثَلࣰ اۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يُضِلُّ ٱللَّهُ مَن يَشَآءُ وَيَهۡدِي مَن يَشَآءُۚ وَمَا يَعۡلَمُ جُنُودَ رَبِّكَ إِلَّا هُوَۚ وَمَا هِيَ إِلَّا ذِكۡرَىٰ لِلۡبَشَرِ31

Ayah 31

Translation of the meaningWe have appointed only ˹stern˺ angels as wardens of the Fire. And We have made their number only as a test for the disbelievers, so that the People of the Book will be certain, and the believers will increase in faith, and neither the People of the Book nor the believers will have any doubts, and so that those ˹hypocrites˺ with sickness in their hearts and the disbelievers will argue, “What does Allah mean by such a number?” In this way Allah leaves whoever He wills to stray and guides whoever He wills. And none knows the forces of your Lord except He. And this ˹description of Hell˺ is only a reminder to humanity

كَلَّا وَٱلۡقَمَرِ32

Ayah 32

Translation of the meaningBut no! By the moon

وَٱلَّيۡلِ إِذۡ أَدۡبَرَ33

Ayah 33

Translation of the meaningand the night as it retreats

وَٱلصُّبۡحِ إِذَآ أَسۡفَرَ34

Ayah 34

Translation of the meaningand the day as it breaks

إِنَّهَا لَإِحۡدَى ٱلۡكُبَرِ35

Ayah 35

Translation of the meaningSurely Hell is one of the mightiest catastrophes—

نَذِيرࣰ ا لِّلۡبَشَرِ36

Ayah 36

Translation of the meaninga warning to humankind

لِمَن شَآءَ مِنكُمۡ أَن يَتَقَدَّمَ أَوۡ يَتَأَخَّرَ37

Ayah 37

Translation of the meaningto whichever of you chooses to take the lead or lag behind

كُلُّ نَفۡسِۭ بِمَا كَسَبَتۡ رَهِينَةٌ38

Ayah 38

Translation of the meaningEvery soul will be detained for what it has done

إِلَّآ أَصۡحَٰبَ ٱلۡيَمِينِ39

Ayah 39

Translation of the meaningexcept the people of the right

فِي جَنَّٰتࣲ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ40

Ayah 40

Translation of the meaningwho will be in Gardens, asking one another

عَنِ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِينَ41

Ayah 41

Translation of the meaningabout the wicked ˹who will then be asked˺

مَا سَلَكَكُمۡ فِي سَقَرَ42

Ayah 42

Translation of the meaning“What has landed you in Hell?”

قَالُواْ لَمۡ نَكُ مِنَ ٱلۡمُصَلِّينَ43

Ayah 43

Translation of the meaningThey will reply, “We were not of those who prayed

وَلَمۡ نَكُ نُطۡعِمُ ٱلۡمِسۡكِينَ44

Ayah 44

Translation of the meaningnor did we feed the poor

وَكُنَّا نَخُوضُ مَعَ ٱلۡخَآئِضِينَ45

Ayah 45

Translation of the meaningWe used to indulge ˹in falsehood˺ along with others

وَكُنَّا نُكَذِّبُ بِيَوۡمِ ٱلدِّينِ46

Ayah 46

Translation of the meaningand deny the Day of Judgment

حَتَّىٰٓ أَتَىٰنَا ٱلۡيَقِينُ47

Ayah 47

Translation of the meaninguntil the inevitable came to us.”

فَمَا تَنفَعُهُمۡ شَفَٰعَةُ ٱلشَّٰفِعِينَ48

Ayah 48

Translation of the meaningSo the pleas of intercessors will be of no benefit to them

فَمَا لَهُمۡ عَنِ ٱلتَّذۡكِرَةِ مُعۡرِضِينَ49

Ayah 49

Translation of the meaningNow, what is the matter with them that they are turning away from the reminder

كَأَنَّهُمۡ حُمُرࣱ مُّسۡتَنفِرَةࣱ‏50

Ayah 50

Translation of the meaningas if they were spooked zebras

فَرَّتۡ مِن قَسۡوَرَةِۭ51

Ayah 51

Translation of the meaningfleeing from a lion

بَلۡ يُرِيدُ كُلُّ ٱمۡرِيࣲٕ مِّنۡهُمۡ أَن يُؤۡتَىٰ صُحُفࣰ ا مُّنَشَّرَةࣰ‏52

Ayah 52

Translation of the meaningIn fact, each one of them wishes to be given a ˹personal˺ letter ˹from Allah˺ for all ˹to read˺

كَلَّاۖ بَل لَّا يَخَافُونَ ٱلۡأٓخِرَةَ53

Ayah 53

Translation of the meaningBut no! In fact, they do not fear the Hereafter

كَلَّآ إِنَّهُۥ تَذۡكِرَةࣱ‏54

Ayah 54

Translation of the meaningEnough! Surely this ˹Quran˺ is a reminder

فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ55

Ayah 55

Translation of the meaningSo let whoever wills be mindful of it

وَمَا يَذۡكُرُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُۚ هُوَ أَهۡلُ ٱلتَّقۡوَىٰ وَأَهۡلُ ٱلۡمَغۡفِرَةِ56

Ayah 56

Translation of the meaningBut they cannot do so unless Allah wills. He ˹alone˺ is worthy to be feared and entitled to forgive
