The Inevitable

إِذَا وَقَعَتِ ٱلۡوَاقِعَةُ1

Ayah 1

Translation of the meaningWhen the Inevitable Event takes place

لَيۡسَ لِوَقۡعَتِهَا كَاذِبَةٌ2

Ayah 2

Translation of the meaningthen no one can deny it has come

خَافِضَةࣱ رَّافِعَةٌ3

Ayah 3

Translation of the meaningIt will debase ˹some˺ and elevate ˹others˺

إِذَا رُجَّتِ ٱلۡأَرۡضُ رَجࣰّ ا4

Ayah 4

Translation of the meaningWhen the earth will be violently shaken

وَبُسَّتِ ٱلۡجِبَالُ بَسࣰّ ا5

Ayah 5

Translation of the meaningand the mountains will be crushed to pieces

فَكَانَتۡ هَبَآءࣰ مُّنۢبَثࣰّ ا6

Ayah 6

Translation of the meaningbecoming scattered ˹particles of˺ dust

وَكُنتُمۡ أَزۡوَٰجࣰ ا ثَلَٰثَةࣰ‏7

Ayah 7

Translation of the meaningyou will ˹all˺ be ˹divided into˺ three groups

فَأَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡمَيۡمَنَةِ مَآ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡمَيۡمَنَةِ8

Ayah 8

Translation of the meaningthe people of the right, how ˹blessed˺ will they be

وَأَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡمَشۡـَٔمَةِ مَآ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡمَشۡـَٔمَةِ9

Ayah 9

Translation of the meaningthe people of the left, how ˹miserable˺ will they be

وَٱلسَّٰبِقُونَ ٱلسَّٰبِقُونَ10

Ayah 10

Translation of the meaningand the foremost ˹in faith˺ will be the foremost ˹in Paradise˺

أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ ٱلۡمُقَرَّبُونَ11

Ayah 11

Translation of the meaningThey are the ones nearest ˹to Allah˺

فِي جَنَّٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ12

Ayah 12

Translation of the meaningin the Gardens of Bliss

ثُلَّةࣱ مِّنَ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ13

Ayah 13

Translation of the meaning˹They will be˺ a multitude from earlier generations

وَقَلِيلࣱ مِّنَ ٱلۡأٓخِرِينَ14

Ayah 14

Translation of the meaningand a few from later generations

عَلَىٰ سُرُرࣲ مَّوۡضُونَةࣲ‏15

Ayah 15

Translation of the meaning˹All will be˺ on jewelled thrones

مُّتَّكِـِٔينَ عَلَيۡهَا مُتَقَٰبِلِينَ16

Ayah 16

Translation of the meaningreclining face to face

يَطُوفُ عَلَيۡهِمۡ وِلۡدَٰنࣱ مُّخَلَّدُونَ17

Ayah 17

Translation of the meaningThey will be waited on by eternal youths

بِأَكۡوَابࣲ وَأَبَارِيقَ وَكَأۡسࣲ مِّن مَّعِينࣲ‏18

Ayah 18

Translation of the meaningwith cups, pitchers, and a drink ˹of pure wine˺ from a flowing stream

لَّا يُصَدَّعُونَ عَنۡهَا وَلَا يُنزِفُونَ19

Ayah 19

Translation of the meaningthat will cause them neither headache nor intoxication

وَفَٰكِهَةࣲ مِّمَّا يَتَخَيَّرُونَ20

Ayah 20

Translation of the meaning˹They will also be served˺ any fruit they choose

وَلَحۡمِ طَيۡرࣲ مِّمَّا يَشۡتَهُونَ21

Ayah 21

Translation of the meaningand meat from any bird they desire

وَحُورٌ عِينࣱ‏22

Ayah 22

Translation of the meaningAnd ˹they will have˺ maidens with gorgeous eyes

كَأَمۡثَٰلِ ٱللُّؤۡلُوِٕ ٱلۡمَكۡنُونِ23

Ayah 23

Translation of the meaninglike pristine pearls

جَزَآءَۢ بِمَا كَانُواْ يَعۡمَلُونَ24

Ayah 24

Translation of the meaning˹all˺ as a reward for what they used to do

لَا يَسۡمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغۡوࣰ ا وَلَا تَأۡثِيمًا25

Ayah 25

Translation of the meaningThere they will never hear any idle or sinful talk—

إِلَّا قِيلࣰ ا سَلَٰمࣰ ا سَلَٰمࣰ ا26

Ayah 26

Translation of the meaningonly good and virtuous speech

وَأَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡيَمِينِ مَآ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡيَمِينِ27

Ayah 27

Translation of the meaningAnd the people of the right—how ˹blessed˺ will they be

فِي سِدۡرࣲ مَّخۡضُودࣲ‏28

Ayah 28

Translation of the meaning˹They will be˺ amid thornless lote trees

وَطَلۡحࣲ مَّنضُودࣲ‏29

Ayah 29

Translation of the meaningclusters of bananas

وَظِلࣲّ مَّمۡدُودࣲ‏30

Ayah 30

Translation of the meaningextended shade

وَمَآءࣲ مَّسۡكُوبࣲ‏31

Ayah 31

Translation of the meaningflowing water

وَفَٰكِهَةࣲ كَثِيرَةࣲ‏32

Ayah 32

Translation of the meaningabundant fruit—

لَّا مَقۡطُوعَةࣲ وَلَا مَمۡنُوعَةࣲ‏33

Ayah 33

Translation of the meaningnever out of season nor forbidden—

وَفُرُشࣲ مَّرۡفُوعَةٍ34

Ayah 34

Translation of the meaningand elevated furnishings

إِنَّآ أَنشَأۡنَٰهُنَّ إِنشَآءࣰ‏35

Ayah 35

Translation of the meaningIndeed, We will have perfectly created their mates

فَجَعَلۡنَٰهُنَّ أَبۡكَارًا36

Ayah 36

Translation of the meaningmaking them virgins

عُرُبًا أَتۡرَابࣰ ا37

Ayah 37

Translation of the meaningloving and of equal age

لِّأَصۡحَٰبِ ٱلۡيَمِينِ38

Ayah 38

Translation of the meaningfor the people of the right

ثُلَّةࣱ مِّنَ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ39

Ayah 39

Translation of the meaning˹who will be˺ a multitude from earlier generations

وَثُلَّةࣱ مِّنَ ٱلۡأٓخِرِينَ40

Ayah 40

Translation of the meaningand a multitude from later generations

وَأَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ مَآ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ41

Ayah 41

Translation of the meaningAnd the people of the left—how ˹miserable˺ will they be

فِي سَمُومࣲ وَحَمِيمࣲ‏42

Ayah 42

Translation of the meaning˹They will be˺ in scorching heat and boiling water

وَظِلࣲّ مِّن يَحۡمُومࣲ‏43

Ayah 43

Translation of the meaningin the shade of black smoke

لَّا بَارِدࣲ وَلَا كَرِيمٍ44

Ayah 44

Translation of the meaningneither cool nor refreshing

إِنَّهُمۡ كَانُواْ قَبۡلَ ذَٰلِكَ مُتۡرَفِينَ45

Ayah 45

Translation of the meaningIndeed, before this ˹torment˺ they were spoiled by luxury

وَكَانُواْ يُصِرُّونَ عَلَى ٱلۡحِنثِ ٱلۡعَظِيمِ46

Ayah 46

Translation of the meaningand persisted in the worst of sin

وَكَانُواْ يَقُولُونَ أَئِذَا مِتۡنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابࣰ ا وَعِظَٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَبۡعُوثُونَ47

Ayah 47

Translation of the meaningThey used to ask ˹mockingly˺, “When we are dead and reduced to dust and bones, will we really be resurrected

أَوَءَابَآؤُنَا ٱلۡأَوَّلُونَ48

Ayah 48

Translation of the meaningAnd our forefathers as well?”

قُلۡ إِنَّ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ وَٱلۡأٓخِرِينَ49

Ayah 49

Translation of the meaningSay, ˹O Prophet,˺ “Most certainly, earlier and later generations

لَمَجۡمُوعُونَ إِلَىٰ مِيقَٰتِ يَوۡمࣲ مَّعۡلُومࣲ‏50

Ayah 50

Translation of the meaningwill surely be gathered ˹together˺ for the appointed Day

ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمۡ أَيُّهَا ٱلضَّآلُّونَ ٱلۡمُكَذِّبُونَ51

Ayah 51

Translation of the meaningThen you, O misguided deniers

لَأٓكِلُونَ مِن شَجَرࣲ مِّن زَقُّومࣲ‏52

Ayah 52

Translation of the meaningwill certainly eat from ˹the fruit of˺ the trees of Zaqqûm

فَمَالِـُٔونَ مِنۡهَا ٱلۡبُطُونَ53

Ayah 53

Translation of the meaningfilling up ˹your˺ bellies with it

فَشَٰرِبُونَ عَلَيۡهِ مِنَ ٱلۡحَمِيمِ54

Ayah 54

Translation of the meaningThen on top of that you will drink boiling water—

فَشَٰرِبُونَ شُرۡبَ ٱلۡهِيمِ55

Ayah 55

Translation of the meaningand you will drink ˹it˺ like thirsty camels do.”

هَٰذَا نُزُلُهُمۡ يَوۡمَ ٱلدِّينِ56

Ayah 56

Translation of the meaningThis will be their accommodation on the Day of Judgment

نَحۡنُ خَلَقۡنَٰكُمۡ فَلَوۡلَا تُصَدِّقُونَ57

Ayah 57

Translation of the meaningIt is We Who created you. Will you not then believe ˹in resurrection˺

أَفَرَءَيۡتُم مَّا تُمۡنُونَ58

Ayah 58

Translation of the meaningHave you considered what you ejaculate

ءَأَنتُمۡ تَخۡلُقُونَهُۥٓ أَمۡ نَحۡنُ ٱلۡخَٰلِقُونَ59

Ayah 59

Translation of the meaningIs it you who create ˹a child out of˺ it, or is it We Who do so

نَحۡنُ قَدَّرۡنَا بَيۡنَكُمُ ٱلۡمَوۡتَ وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمَسۡبُوقِينَ60

Ayah 60

Translation of the meaningWe have ordained death for ˹all of˺ you, and We cannot be prevented

عَلَىٰٓ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ أَمۡثَٰلَكُمۡ وَنُنشِئَكُمۡ فِي مَا لَا تَعۡلَمُونَ61

Ayah 61

Translation of the meaningfrom transforming and recreating you in forms unknown to you

وَلَقَدۡ عَلِمۡتُمُ ٱلنَّشۡأَةَ ٱلۡأُولَىٰ فَلَوۡلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ62

Ayah 62

Translation of the meaningYou already know how you were first created. Will you not then be mindful

أَفَرَءَيۡتُم مَّا تَحۡرُثُونَ63

Ayah 63

Translation of the meaningHave you considered what you sow

ءَأَنتُمۡ تَزۡرَعُونَهُۥٓ أَمۡ نَحۡنُ ٱلزَّٰرِعُونَ64

Ayah 64

Translation of the meaningIs it you who cause it to grow, or is it We Who do so

لَوۡ نَشَآءُ لَجَعَلۡنَٰهُ حُطَٰمࣰ ا فَظَلۡتُمۡ تَفَكَّهُونَ65

Ayah 65

Translation of the meaningIf We willed, We could simply reduce this ˹harvest˺ to chaff, leaving you to lament

إِنَّا لَمُغۡرَمُونَ66

Ayah 66

Translation of the meaning“We have truly suffered a ˹great˺ loss

بَلۡ نَحۡنُ مَحۡرُومُونَ67

Ayah 67

Translation of the meaningIn fact, we have been deprived ˹of our livelihood˺.”

أَفَرَءَيۡتُمُ ٱلۡمَآءَ ٱلَّذِي تَشۡرَبُونَ68

Ayah 68

Translation of the meaningHave you considered the water you drink

ءَأَنتُمۡ أَنزَلۡتُمُوهُ مِنَ ٱلۡمُزۡنِ أَمۡ نَحۡنُ ٱلۡمُنزِلُونَ69

Ayah 69

Translation of the meaningIs it you who bring it down from the clouds, or is it We Who do so

لَوۡ نَشَآءُ جَعَلۡنَٰهُ أُجَاجࣰ ا فَلَوۡلَا تَشۡكُرُونَ70

Ayah 70

Translation of the meaningIf We willed, We could make it salty. Will you not then give thanks

أَفَرَءَيۡتُمُ ٱلنَّارَ ٱلَّتِي تُورُونَ71

Ayah 71

Translation of the meaningHave you considered the fire you kindle

ءَأَنتُمۡ أَنشَأۡتُمۡ شَجَرَتَهَآ أَمۡ نَحۡنُ ٱلۡمُنشِـُٔونَ72

Ayah 72

Translation of the meaningIs it you who produce its trees, or is it We Who do so

نَحۡنُ جَعَلۡنَٰهَا تَذۡكِرَةࣰ وَمَتَٰعࣰ ا لِّلۡمُقۡوِينَ73

Ayah 73

Translation of the meaningWe have made it ˹as˺ a reminder ˹of the Hellfire˺ and a provision for the travellers

فَسَبِّحۡ بِٱسۡمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلۡعَظِيمِ74

Ayah 74

Translation of the meaningSo glorify the Name of your Lord, the Greatest

۞فَلَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِمَوَٰقِعِ ٱلنُّجُومِ75

Ayah 75

Translation of the meaningSo I do swear by the positions of the stars—

وَإِنَّهُۥ لَقَسَمࣱ لَّوۡ تَعۡلَمُونَ عَظِيمٌ76

Ayah 76

Translation of the meaningand this, if only you knew, is indeed a great oath—

إِنَّهُۥ لَقُرۡءَانࣱ كَرِيمࣱ‏77

Ayah 77

Translation of the meaningthat this is truly a noble Quran

فِي كِتَٰبࣲ مَّكۡنُونࣲ‏78

Ayah 78

Translation of the meaningin a well-preserved Record

لَّا يَمَسُّهُۥٓ إِلَّا ٱلۡمُطَهَّرُونَ79

Ayah 79

Translation of the meaningtouched by none except the purified ˹angels˺

تَنزِيلࣱ مِّن رَّبِّ ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ80

Ayah 80

Translation of the meaning˹It is˺ a revelation from the Lord of all worlds

أَفَبِهَٰذَا ٱلۡحَدِيثِ أَنتُم مُّدۡهِنُونَ81

Ayah 81

Translation of the meaningHow can you then take this message lightly

وَتَجۡعَلُونَ رِزۡقَكُمۡ أَنَّكُمۡ تُكَذِّبُونَ82

Ayah 82

Translation of the meaningand repay ˹Allah for˺ your provisions with denial

فَلَوۡلَآ إِذَا بَلَغَتِ ٱلۡحُلۡقُومَ83

Ayah 83

Translation of the meaningWhy then ˹are you helpless˺ when the soul ˹of a dying person˺ reaches ˹their˺ throat

وَأَنتُمۡ حِينَئِذࣲ تَنظُرُونَ84

Ayah 84

Translation of the meaningwhile you are looking on

وَنَحۡنُ أَقۡرَبُ إِلَيۡهِ مِنكُمۡ وَلَٰكِن لَّا تُبۡصِرُونَ85

Ayah 85

Translation of the meaningAnd We are nearer to such a person than you, but you cannot see

فَلَوۡلَآ إِن كُنتُمۡ غَيۡرَ مَدِينِينَ86

Ayah 86

Translation of the meaningNow, if you are not subject to Our Will ˹as you claim˺

تَرۡجِعُونَهَآ إِن كُنتُمۡ صَٰدِقِينَ87

Ayah 87

Translation of the meaningbring that soul back, if what you say is true

فَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُقَرَّبِينَ88

Ayah 88

Translation of the meaningSo, if the deceased is one of those brought near ˹to Us˺

فَرَوۡحࣱ وَرَيۡحَانࣱ وَجَنَّتُ نَعِيمࣲ‏89

Ayah 89

Translation of the meaningthen ˹such a person will have˺ serenity, fragrance, and a Garden of Bliss

وَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنۡ أَصۡحَٰبِ ٱلۡيَمِينِ90

Ayah 90

Translation of the meaningAnd if the deceased is one of the people of the right

فَسَلَٰمࣱ لَّكَ مِنۡ أَصۡحَٰبِ ٱلۡيَمِينِ91

Ayah 91

Translation of the meaningthen ˹they will be told,˺ “Greetings to you from the people of the right.”

وَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ ٱلضَّآلِّينَ92

Ayah 92

Translation of the meaningBut if such person is one of the misguided deniers

فَنُزُلࣱ مِّنۡ حَمِيمࣲ‏93

Ayah 93

Translation of the meaningthen their accommodation will be boiling water ˹to drink˺

وَتَصۡلِيَةُ جَحِيمٍ94

Ayah 94

Translation of the meaningand burning in Hellfire

إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَهُوَ حَقُّ ٱلۡيَقِينِ95

Ayah 95

Translation of the meaningIndeed, this is the absolute truth

فَسَبِّحۡ بِٱسۡمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلۡعَظِيمِ96

Ayah 96

Translation of the meaningSo glorify the Name of your Lord, the Greatest
