Surah 37verses 182 Revealed in MeccanJuz 23–23

Go to verse

بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

وَٱلصَّٰٓفَّٰتِ صَفࣰّ ا

Translation of the meaningBy those ˹angels˺ lined up in ranks

فَٱلزَّٰجِرَٰتِ زَجۡرࣰ ا

Translation of the meaningand those who diligently drive ˹the clouds˺

فَٱلتَّٰلِيَٰتِ ذِكۡرًا

Translation of the meaningand those who recite the Reminder

إِنَّ إِلَٰهَكُمۡ لَوَٰحِدࣱ‏

Translation of the meaningSurely your God is One

رَّبُّ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَمَا بَيۡنَهُمَا وَرَبُّ ٱلۡمَشَٰرِقِ

Translation of the meaning˹He is˺ the Lord of the heavens and the earth and everything in between, and the Lord of all points of sunrise

إِنَّا زَيَّنَّا ٱلسَّمَآءَ ٱلدُّنۡيَا بِزِينَةٍ ٱلۡكَوَاكِبِ

Translation of the meaningIndeed, We have adorned the lowest heaven with the stars for decoration

وَحِفۡظࣰ ا مِّن كُلِّ شَيۡطَٰنࣲ مَّارِدࣲ‏

Translation of the meaningand ˹for˺ protection from every rebellious devil

لَّا يَسَّمَّعُونَ إِلَى ٱلۡمَلَإِ ٱلۡأَعۡلَىٰ وَيُقۡذَفُونَ مِن كُلِّ جَانِبࣲ‏

Translation of the meaningThey cannot listen to the highest assembly ˹of angels˺ for they are pelted from every side

دُحُورࣰ اۖ وَلَهُمۡ عَذَابࣱ وَاصِبٌ

Translation of the meaning˹fiercely˺ driven away. And they will suffer an everlasting torment

إِلَّا مَنۡ خَطِفَ ٱلۡخَطۡفَةَ فَأَتۡبَعَهُۥ شِهَابࣱ ثَاقِبࣱ‏

Translation of the meaningBut whoever manages to stealthily eavesdrop is ˹instantly˺ pursued by a piercing flare

فَٱسۡتَفۡتِهِمۡ أَهُمۡ أَشَدُّ خَلۡقًا أَم مَّنۡ خَلَقۡنَآۚ إِنَّا خَلَقۡنَٰهُم مِّن طِينࣲ لَّازِبِۭ

Translation of the meaningSo ask them ˹O Prophet˺, which is harder to create: them or other marvels of Our creation? Indeed, We created them from a sticky clay

بَلۡ عَجِبۡتَ وَيَسۡخَرُونَ

Translation of the meaningIn fact, you are astonished ˹by their denial˺, while they ridicule ˹you˺

وَإِذَا ذُكِّرُواْ لَا يَذۡكُرُونَ

Translation of the meaningWhen they are reminded, they are never mindful

وَإِذَا رَأَوۡاْ ءَايَةࣰ يَسۡتَسۡخِرُونَ

Translation of the meaningAnd whenever they see a sign, they make fun of it

وَقَالُوٓاْ إِنۡ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا سِحۡرࣱ مُّبِينٌ

Translation of the meaningsaying, “This is nothing but pure magic

أَءِذَا مِتۡنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابࣰ ا وَعِظَٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَبۡعُوثُونَ

Translation of the meaningWhen we are dead and reduced to dust and bones, will we really be resurrected

أَوَءَابَآؤُنَا ٱلۡأَوَّلُونَ

Translation of the meaningAnd our forefathers as well?”

قُلۡ نَعَمۡ وَأَنتُمۡ دَٰخِرُونَ

Translation of the meaningSay, “Yes! And you will be fully humbled.”

فَإِنَّمَا هِيَ زَجۡرَةࣱ وَٰحِدَةࣱ فَإِذَا هُمۡ يَنظُرُونَ

Translation of the meaningIt will only take one Blast, then at once they will see ˹it all˺

وَقَالُواْ يَٰوَيۡلَنَا هَٰذَا يَوۡمُ ٱلدِّينِ

Translation of the meaningThey will cry, “Oh, woe to us! This is the Day of Judgment!”

هَٰذَا يَوۡمُ ٱلۡفَصۡلِ ٱلَّذِي كُنتُم بِهِۦ تُكَذِّبُونَ

Translation of the meaning˹They will be told,˺ “This is the Day of ˹Final˺ Decision which you used to deny.”

۞ٱحۡشُرُواْ ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُواْ وَأَزۡوَٰجَهُمۡ وَمَا كَانُواْ يَعۡبُدُونَ

Translation of the meaning˹Allah will say to the angels,˺ “Gather ˹all˺ the wrongdoers along with their peers, and whatever they used to worship

مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ فَٱهۡدُوهُمۡ إِلَىٰ صِرَٰطِ ٱلۡجَحِيمِ

Translation of the meaninginstead of Allah, then lead them ˹all˺ to the path of Hell

وَقِفُوهُمۡۖ إِنَّهُم مَّسۡـُٔولُونَ

Translation of the meaningAnd detain them, for they must be questioned.”

مَا لَكُمۡ لَا تَنَاصَرُونَ

Translation of the meaning˹Then they will be asked,˺ “What is the matter with you that you can no longer help each other?”

بَلۡ هُمُ ٱلۡيَوۡمَ مُسۡتَسۡلِمُونَ

Translation of the meaningIn fact, on that Day they will be ˹fully˺ submissive

وَأَقۡبَلَ بَعۡضُهُمۡ عَلَىٰ بَعۡضࣲ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ

Translation of the meaningThey will turn on each other, throwing blame

قَالُوٓاْ إِنَّكُمۡ كُنتُمۡ تَأۡتُونَنَا عَنِ ٱلۡيَمِينِ

Translation of the meaningThe misled will say, “It was you who deluded us away from what is right.”

قَالُواْ بَل لَّمۡ تَكُونُواْ مُؤۡمِنِينَ

Translation of the meaningThe misleaders will reply, “No! You disbelieved on your own

وَمَا كَانَ لَنَا عَلَيۡكُم مِّن سُلۡطَٰنِۭۖ بَلۡ كُنتُمۡ قَوۡمࣰ ا طَٰغِينَ

Translation of the meaningWe had no authority over you. In fact, you yourselves were a transgressing people

فَحَقَّ عَلَيۡنَا قَوۡلُ رَبِّنَآۖ إِنَّا لَذَآئِقُونَ

Translation of the meaningThe decree of our Lord has come to pass against us ˹all˺: we will certainly taste ˹the punishment˺

فَأَغۡوَيۡنَٰكُمۡ إِنَّا كُنَّا غَٰوِينَ

Translation of the meaningWe caused you to deviate, for we ourselves were deviant.”

فَإِنَّهُمۡ يَوۡمَئِذࣲ فِي ٱلۡعَذَابِ مُشۡتَرِكُونَ

Translation of the meaningSurely on that Day they will ˹all˺ share in the punishment

إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَفۡعَلُ بِٱلۡمُجۡرِمِينَ

Translation of the meaningThat is certainly how We deal with the wicked

إِنَّهُمۡ كَانُوٓاْ إِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمۡ لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُ يَسۡتَكۡبِرُونَ

Translation of the meaningFor whenever it was said to them ˹in the world˺, “There is no god ˹worthy of worship˺ except Allah,” they acted arrogantly

وَيَقُولُونَ أَئِنَّا لَتَارِكُوٓاْ ءَالِهَتِنَا لِشَاعِرࣲ مَّجۡنُونِۭ

Translation of the meaningand argued, “Should we really abandon our gods for a mad poet?”

بَلۡ جَآءَ بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَصَدَّقَ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِينَ

Translation of the meaningIn fact, he came with the truth, confirming ˹earlier˺ messengers

إِنَّكُمۡ لَذَآئِقُواْ ٱلۡعَذَابِ ٱلۡأَلِيمِ

Translation of the meaningYou will certainly taste the painful torment

وَمَا تُجۡزَوۡنَ إِلَّا مَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ

Translation of the meaningand will only be rewarded for what you used to do

إِلَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِينَ

Translation of the meaningBut not the chosen servants of Allah

أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ لَهُمۡ رِزۡقࣱ مَّعۡلُومࣱ‏

Translation of the meaningThey will have a known provision

فَوَٰكِهُ وَهُم مُّكۡرَمُونَ

Translation of the meaningfruits ˹of every type˺. And they will be honoured

فِي جَنَّٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ

Translation of the meaningin the Gardens of Bliss

عَلَىٰ سُرُرࣲ مُّتَقَٰبِلِينَ

Translation of the meaningfacing each other on thrones

يُطَافُ عَلَيۡهِم بِكَأۡسࣲ مِّن مَّعِينِۭ

Translation of the meaningA drink ˹of pure wine˺ will be passed around to them from a flowing stream

بَيۡضَآءَ لَذَّةࣲ لِّلشَّٰرِبِينَ

Translation of the meaningcrystal-white, delicious to drink

لَا فِيهَا غَوۡلࣱ وَلَا هُمۡ عَنۡهَا يُنزَفُونَ

Translation of the meaningIt will neither harm ˹them˺, nor will they be intoxicated by it

وَعِندَهُمۡ قَٰصِرَٰتُ ٱلطَّرۡفِ عِينࣱ‏

Translation of the meaningAnd with them will be maidens of modest gaze and gorgeous eyes

كَأَنَّهُنَّ بَيۡضࣱ مَّكۡنُونࣱ‏

Translation of the meaningas if they were pristine pearls

فَأَقۡبَلَ بَعۡضُهُمۡ عَلَىٰ بَعۡضࣲ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ

Translation of the meaningThen they will turn to one another inquisitively

قَالَ قَآئِلࣱ مِّنۡهُمۡ إِنِّي كَانَ لِي قَرِينࣱ‏

Translation of the meaningOne of them will say, “I once had a companion ˹in the world˺

يَقُولُ أَءِنَّكَ لَمِنَ ٱلۡمُصَدِّقِينَ

Translation of the meaningwho used to ask ˹me˺, ‘Do you actually believe ˹in resurrection˺

أَءِذَا مِتۡنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابࣰ ا وَعِظَٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَدِينُونَ

Translation of the meaningWhen we are dead and reduced to dust and bones, will we really be brought to judgment?’”

قَالَ هَلۡ أَنتُم مُّطَّلِعُونَ

Translation of the meaningHe will ˹then˺ ask, “Would you care to see ˹his fate˺?”

فَٱطَّلَعَ فَرَءَاهُ فِي سَوَآءِ ٱلۡجَحِيمِ

Translation of the meaningThen he ˹and the others˺ will look and spot him in the midst of the Hellfire

قَالَ تَٱللَّهِ إِن كِدتَّ لَتُرۡدِينِ

Translation of the meaningHe will ˹then˺ say, “By Allah! You nearly ruined me

وَلَوۡلَا نِعۡمَةُ رَبِّي لَكُنتُ مِنَ ٱلۡمُحۡضَرِينَ

Translation of the meaningHad it not been for the grace of my Lord, I ˹too˺ would have certainly been among those brought ˹to Hell˺.”

أَفَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمَيِّتِينَ

Translation of the meaning˹Then he will ask his fellow believers,˺ “Can you imagine that we will never die

إِلَّا مَوۡتَتَنَا ٱلۡأُولَىٰ وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمُعَذَّبِينَ

Translation of the meaningexcept our first death, nor be punished ˹like the others˺?”

إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَهُوَ ٱلۡفَوۡزُ ٱلۡعَظِيمُ

Translation of the meaningThis is truly the ultimate triumph

لِمِثۡلِ هَٰذَا فَلۡيَعۡمَلِ ٱلۡعَٰمِلُونَ

Translation of the meaningFor such ˹honour˺ all should strive

أَذَٰلِكَ خَيۡرࣱ نُّزُلًا أَمۡ شَجَرَةُ ٱلزَّقُّومِ

Translation of the meaningIs this ˹bliss˺ a better accommodation or the tree of Zaqqûm

إِنَّا جَعَلۡنَٰهَا فِتۡنَةࣰ لِّلظَّٰلِمِينَ

Translation of the meaningWe have surely made it a test for the wrongdoers

إِنَّهَا شَجَرَةࣱ تَخۡرُجُ فِيٓ أَصۡلِ ٱلۡجَحِيمِ

Translation of the meaningIndeed, it is a tree that grows in the depths of Hell

طَلۡعُهَا كَأَنَّهُۥ رُءُوسُ ٱلشَّيَٰطِينِ

Translation of the meaningbearing fruit like devils’ heads

فَإِنَّهُمۡ لَأٓكِلُونَ مِنۡهَا فَمَالِـُٔونَ مِنۡهَا ٱلۡبُطُونَ

Translation of the meaningThe evildoers will certainly ˹be left to˺ eat from it, filling up their bellies with it

ثُمَّ إِنَّ لَهُمۡ عَلَيۡهَا لَشَوۡبࣰ ا مِّنۡ حَمِيمࣲ‏

Translation of the meaningThen on top of that they will be given a blend of boiling drink

ثُمَّ إِنَّ مَرۡجِعَهُمۡ لَإِلَى ٱلۡجَحِيمِ

Translation of the meaningThen they will ultimately return to ˹their place in˺ Hell

إِنَّهُمۡ أَلۡفَوۡاْ ءَابَآءَهُمۡ ضَآلِّينَ

Translation of the meaningIndeed, they found their forefathers astray

فَهُمۡ عَلَىٰٓ ءَاثَٰرِهِمۡ يُهۡرَعُونَ

Translation of the meaningso they rushed in their footsteps

وَلَقَدۡ ضَلَّ قَبۡلَهُمۡ أَكۡثَرُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ

Translation of the meaningAnd surely most of the earlier generations had strayed before them

وَلَقَدۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا فِيهِم مُّنذِرِينَ

Translation of the meaningalthough We had certainly sent warners among them

فَٱنظُرۡ كَيۡفَ كَانَ عَٰقِبَةُ ٱلۡمُنذَرِينَ

Translation of the meaningSee then what was the end of those who had been warned

إِلَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِينَ

Translation of the meaningBut not the chosen servants of Allah

وَلَقَدۡ نَادَىٰنَا نُوحࣱ فَلَنِعۡمَ ٱلۡمُجِيبُونَ

Translation of the meaningIndeed, Noah cried out to Us, and how excellent are We in responding

وَنَجَّيۡنَٰهُ وَأَهۡلَهُۥ مِنَ ٱلۡكَرۡبِ ٱلۡعَظِيمِ

Translation of the meaningWe delivered him and his family from the great distress

وَجَعَلۡنَا ذُرِّيَّتَهُۥ هُمُ ٱلۡبَاقِينَ

Translation of the meaningand made his descendants the sole survivors

وَتَرَكۡنَا عَلَيۡهِ فِي ٱلۡأٓخِرِينَ

Translation of the meaningAnd We blessed him ˹with honourable mention˺ among later generations

سَلَٰمٌ عَلَىٰ نُوحࣲ فِي ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ

Translation of the meaning“Peace be upon Noah among all peoples.”

إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَجۡزِي ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِينَ

Translation of the meaningIndeed, this is how We reward the good-doers

إِنَّهُۥ مِنۡ عِبَادِنَا ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ

Translation of the meaning˹For˺ he was truly one of Our faithful servants

ثُمَّ أَغۡرَقۡنَا ٱلۡأٓخَرِينَ

Translation of the meaningThen We drowned the others

۞وَإِنَّ مِن شِيعَتِهِۦ لَإِبۡرَٰهِيمَ

Translation of the meaningAnd indeed, one of those who followed his way was Abraham

إِذۡ جَآءَ رَبَّهُۥ بِقَلۡبࣲ سَلِيمٍ

Translation of the meaning˹Remember˺ when he came to his Lord with a pure heart

إِذۡ قَالَ لِأَبِيهِ وَقَوۡمِهِۦ مَاذَا تَعۡبُدُونَ

Translation of the meaningand said to his father and his people, “What are you worshipping

أَئِفۡكًا ءَالِهَةࣰ دُونَ ٱللَّهِ تُرِيدُونَ

Translation of the meaningIs it false gods that you desire instead of Allah

فَمَا ظَنُّكُم بِرَبِّ ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ

Translation of the meaningWhat then do you expect from the Lord of all worlds?”

فَنَظَرَ نَظۡرَةࣰ فِي ٱلنُّجُومِ

Translation of the meaningHe later looked up to the stars ˹in contemplation˺

فَقَالَ إِنِّي سَقِيمࣱ‏

Translation of the meaningthen said, “I am really sick.”

فَتَوَلَّوۡاْ عَنۡهُ مُدۡبِرِينَ

Translation of the meaningSo they turned their backs on him and went away

فَرَاغَ إِلَىٰٓ ءَالِهَتِهِمۡ فَقَالَ أَلَا تَأۡكُلُونَ

Translation of the meaningThen he ˹stealthily˺ advanced towards their gods, and said ˹mockingly˺, “Will you not eat ˹your offerings˺

مَا لَكُمۡ لَا تَنطِقُونَ

Translation of the meaningWhat is wrong with you that you cannot speak?”

فَرَاغَ عَلَيۡهِمۡ ضَرۡبَۢا بِٱلۡيَمِينِ

Translation of the meaningThen he swiftly turned on them, striking ˹them˺ with his right hand

فَأَقۡبَلُوٓاْ إِلَيۡهِ يَزِفُّونَ

Translation of the meaningLater, his people came rushing towards him ˹furiously˺

قَالَ أَتَعۡبُدُونَ مَا تَنۡحِتُونَ

Translation of the meaningHe argued, “How can you worship what you carve ˹with your own hands˺

وَٱللَّهُ خَلَقَكُمۡ وَمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ

Translation of the meaningwhen it is Allah Who created you and whatever you do?”

قَالُواْ ٱبۡنُواْ لَهُۥ بُنۡيَٰنࣰ ا فَأَلۡقُوهُ فِي ٱلۡجَحِيمِ

Translation of the meaningThey said ˹to one another˺, “Build him a furnace and cast him into the blazing fire.”

فَأَرَادُواْ بِهِۦ كَيۡدࣰ ا فَجَعَلۡنَٰهُمُ ٱلۡأَسۡفَلِينَ

Translation of the meaningAnd so they sought to harm him, but We made them inferior

وَقَالَ إِنِّي ذَاهِبٌ إِلَىٰ رَبِّي سَيَهۡدِينِ

Translation of the meaningHe later said, “I am leaving ˹in obedience˺ to my Lord. He will guide me

رَبِّ هَبۡ لِي مِنَ ٱلصَّٰلِحِينَ

Translation of the meaningMy Lord! Bless me with righteous offspring.”

فَبَشَّرۡنَٰهُ بِغُلَٰمٍ حَلِيمࣲ‏

Translation of the meaningSo We gave him good news of a forbearing son

فَلَمَّا بَلَغَ مَعَهُ ٱلسَّعۡيَ قَالَ يَٰبُنَيَّ إِنِّيٓ أَرَىٰ فِي ٱلۡمَنَامِ أَنِّيٓ أَذۡبَحُكَ فَٱنظُرۡ مَاذَا تَرَىٰۚ قَالَ يَٰٓأَبَتِ ٱفۡعَلۡ مَا تُؤۡمَرُۖ سَتَجِدُنِيٓ إِن شَآءَ ٱللَّهُ مِنَ ٱلصَّٰبِرِينَ

Translation of the meaningThen when the boy reached the age to work with him, Abraham said, “O my dear son! I have seen in a dream that I ˹must˺ sacrifice you. So tell me what you think.” He replied, “O my dear father! Do as you are commanded. Allah willing, you will find me steadfast.”

فَلَمَّآ أَسۡلَمَا وَتَلَّهُۥ لِلۡجَبِينِ

Translation of the meaningThen when they submitted ˹to Allah’s Will˺, and Abraham laid him on the side of his forehead ˹for sacrifice˺

وَنَٰدَيۡنَٰهُ أَن يَٰٓإِبۡرَٰهِيمُ

Translation of the meaningWe called out to him, “O Abraham

قَدۡ صَدَّقۡتَ ٱلرُّءۡيَآۚ إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَجۡزِي ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِينَ

Translation of the meaningYou have already fulfilled the vision.” Indeed, this is how We reward the good-doers

إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَهُوَ ٱلۡبَلَٰٓؤُاْ ٱلۡمُبِينُ

Translation of the meaningThat was truly a revealing test

وَفَدَيۡنَٰهُ بِذِبۡحٍ عَظِيمࣲ‏

Translation of the meaningAnd We ransomed his son with a great sacrifice

وَتَرَكۡنَا عَلَيۡهِ فِي ٱلۡأٓخِرِينَ

Translation of the meaningand blessed Abraham ˹with honourable mention˺ among later generations

سَلَٰمٌ عَلَىٰٓ إِبۡرَٰهِيمَ

Translation of the meaning“Peace be upon Abraham.”

كَذَٰلِكَ نَجۡزِي ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِينَ

Translation of the meaningThis is how We reward the good-doers

إِنَّهُۥ مِنۡ عِبَادِنَا ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ

Translation of the meaningHe was truly one of Our faithful servants

وَبَشَّرۡنَٰهُ بِإِسۡحَٰقَ نَبِيࣰّ ا مِّنَ ٱلصَّٰلِحِينَ

Translation of the meaningWe ˹later˺ gave him good news of Isaac—a prophet, and one of the righteous

وَبَٰرَكۡنَا عَلَيۡهِ وَعَلَىٰٓ إِسۡحَٰقَۚ وَمِن ذُرِّيَّتِهِمَا مُحۡسِنࣱ وَظَالِمࣱ لِّنَفۡسِهِۦ مُبِينࣱ‏

Translation of the meaningWe blessed him and Isaac as well. Some of their descendants did good, while others clearly wronged themselves

وَلَقَدۡ مَنَنَّا عَلَىٰ مُوسَىٰ وَهَٰرُونَ

Translation of the meaningAnd We certainly showed favour to Moses and Aaron

وَنَجَّيۡنَٰهُمَا وَقَوۡمَهُمَا مِنَ ٱلۡكَرۡبِ ٱلۡعَظِيمِ

Translation of the meaningand delivered them and their people from the great distress

وَنَصَرۡنَٰهُمۡ فَكَانُواْ هُمُ ٱلۡغَٰلِبِينَ

Translation of the meaningWe helped them so it was they who prevailed

وَءَاتَيۡنَٰهُمَا ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ ٱلۡمُسۡتَبِينَ

Translation of the meaningWe gave them the clear Scripture

وَهَدَيۡنَٰهُمَا ٱلصِّرَٰطَ ٱلۡمُسۡتَقِيمَ

Translation of the meaningand guided them to the Straight Path

وَتَرَكۡنَا عَلَيۡهِمَا فِي ٱلۡأٓخِرِينَ

Translation of the meaningAnd We blessed them ˹with honourable mention˺ among later generations

سَلَٰمٌ عَلَىٰ مُوسَىٰ وَهَٰرُونَ

Translation of the meaning“Peace be upon Moses and Aaron.”

إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَجۡزِي ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِينَ

Translation of the meaningIndeed, this is how We reward the good-doers

إِنَّهُمَا مِنۡ عِبَادِنَا ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ

Translation of the meaningThey were truly ˹two˺ of Our faithful servants

وَإِنَّ إِلۡيَاسَ لَمِنَ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِينَ

Translation of the meaningAnd Elias was indeed one of the messengers

إِذۡ قَالَ لِقَوۡمِهِۦٓ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ

Translation of the meaning˹Remember˺ when he said to his people, “Will you not fear ˹Allah˺

أَتَدۡعُونَ بَعۡلࣰ ا وَتَذَرُونَ أَحۡسَنَ ٱلۡخَٰلِقِينَ

Translation of the meaningDo you call upon ˹the idol of˺ Ba’l and abandon the Best of Creators—

ٱللَّهَ رَبَّكُمۡ وَرَبَّ ءَابَآئِكُمُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ

Translation of the meaningAllah, your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers?”

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَإِنَّهُمۡ لَمُحۡضَرُونَ

Translation of the meaningBut they rejected him, so they will certainly be brought ˹for punishment˺

إِلَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِينَ

Translation of the meaningBut not the chosen servants of Allah

وَتَرَكۡنَا عَلَيۡهِ فِي ٱلۡأٓخِرِينَ

Translation of the meaningWe blessed him ˹with honourable mention˺ among later generations

سَلَٰمٌ عَلَىٰٓ إِلۡ يَاسِينَ

Translation of the meaning“Peace be upon Elias.”

إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَجۡزِي ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِينَ

Translation of the meaningIndeed, this is how We reward the good-doers

إِنَّهُۥ مِنۡ عِبَادِنَا ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ

Translation of the meaningHe was truly one of Our faithful servants

وَإِنَّ لُوطࣰ ا لَّمِنَ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِينَ

Translation of the meaningAnd Lot was indeed one of the messengers

إِذۡ نَجَّيۡنَٰهُ وَأَهۡلَهُۥٓ أَجۡمَعِينَ

Translation of the meaning˹Remember˺ when We delivered him and all of his family

إِلَّا عَجُوزࣰ ا فِي ٱلۡغَٰبِرِينَ

Translation of the meaningexcept an old woman, who was one of the doomed

ثُمَّ دَمَّرۡنَا ٱلۡأٓخَرِينَ

Translation of the meaningThen We ˹utterly˺ destroyed the rest

وَإِنَّكُمۡ لَتَمُرُّونَ عَلَيۡهِم مُّصۡبِحِينَ

Translation of the meaningYou ˹Meccans˺ certainly pass by their ruins day

وَبِٱلَّيۡلِۚ أَفَلَا تَعۡقِلُونَ

Translation of the meaningand night. Will you not then understand

وَإِنَّ يُونُسَ لَمِنَ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِينَ

Translation of the meaningAnd Jonah was indeed one of the messengers

إِذۡ أَبَقَ إِلَى ٱلۡفُلۡكِ ٱلۡمَشۡحُونِ

Translation of the meaning˹Remember˺ when he fled to the overloaded ship

فَسَاهَمَ فَكَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُدۡحَضِينَ

Translation of the meaningThen ˹to save it from sinking,˺ he drew straws ˹with other passengers˺. He lost ˹and was thrown overboard˺

فَٱلۡتَقَمَهُ ٱلۡحُوتُ وَهُوَ مُلِيمࣱ‏

Translation of the meaningThen the whale engulfed him while he was blameworthy

فَلَوۡلَآ أَنَّهُۥ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُسَبِّحِينَ

Translation of the meaningHad he not ˹constantly˺ glorified ˹Allah˺

لَلَبِثَ فِي بَطۡنِهِۦٓ إِلَىٰ يَوۡمِ يُبۡعَثُونَ

Translation of the meaninghe would have certainly remained in its belly until the Day of Resurrection

۞فَنَبَذۡنَٰهُ بِٱلۡعَرَآءِ وَهُوَ سَقِيمࣱ‏

Translation of the meaningBut We cast him onto the open ˹shore˺, ˹totally˺ worn out

وَأَنۢبَتۡنَا عَلَيۡهِ شَجَرَةࣰ مِّن يَقۡطِينࣲ‏

Translation of the meaningand caused a squash plant to grow over him

وَأَرۡسَلۡنَٰهُ إِلَىٰ مِاْئَةِ أَلۡفٍ أَوۡ يَزِيدُونَ

Translation of the meaningWe ˹later˺ sent him ˹back˺ to ˹his city of˺ at least one hundred thousand people

فَـَٔامَنُواْ فَمَتَّعۡنَٰهُمۡ إِلَىٰ حِينࣲ‏

Translation of the meaningwho then believed ˹in him˺, so We allowed them enjoyment for a while

فَٱسۡتَفۡتِهِمۡ أَلِرَبِّكَ ٱلۡبَنَاتُ وَلَهُمُ ٱلۡبَنُونَ

Translation of the meaningAsk them ˹O Prophet˺ if your Lord has daughters, while the pagans ˹prefer to˺ have sons

أَمۡ خَلَقۡنَا ٱلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةَ إِنَٰثࣰ ا وَهُمۡ شَٰهِدُونَ

Translation of the meaningOr ˹ask them˺ if We created the angels as females right before their eyes

أَلَآ إِنَّهُم مِّنۡ إِفۡكِهِمۡ لَيَقُولُونَ

Translation of the meaningIndeed, it is one of their ˹outrageous˺ fabrications to say

وَلَدَ ٱللَّهُ وَإِنَّهُمۡ لَكَٰذِبُونَ

Translation of the meaning“Allah has children.” They are simply liars

أَصۡطَفَى ٱلۡبَنَاتِ عَلَى ٱلۡبَنِينَ

Translation of the meaningHas He chosen daughters over sons

مَا لَكُمۡ كَيۡفَ تَحۡكُمُونَ

Translation of the meaningWhat is the matter with you? How do you judge

أَفَلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ

Translation of the meaningWill you not then be mindful

أَمۡ لَكُمۡ سُلۡطَٰنࣱ مُّبِينࣱ‏

Translation of the meaningOr do you have ˹any˺ compelling proof

فَأۡتُواْ بِكِتَٰبِكُمۡ إِن كُنتُمۡ صَٰدِقِينَ

Translation of the meaningThen bring ˹us˺ your scripture, if what you say is true

وَجَعَلُواْ بَيۡنَهُۥ وَبَيۡنَ ٱلۡجِنَّةِ نَسَبࣰ اۚ وَلَقَدۡ عَلِمَتِ ٱلۡجِنَّةُ إِنَّهُمۡ لَمُحۡضَرُونَ

Translation of the meaningThey have also established a ˹marital˺ relationship between Him and the jinn. Yet the jinn ˹themselves˺ know well that such people will certainly be brought ˹for punishment˺

سُبۡحَٰنَ ٱللَّهِ عَمَّا يَصِفُونَ

Translation of the meaningGlorified is Allah far above what they claim

إِلَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِينَ

Translation of the meaningBut not the chosen servants of Allah

فَإِنَّكُمۡ وَمَا تَعۡبُدُونَ

Translation of the meaningSurely you ˹pagans˺ and whatever ˹idols˺ you worship

مَآ أَنتُمۡ عَلَيۡهِ بِفَٰتِنِينَ

Translation of the meaningcan never lure ˹anyone˺ away from Him

إِلَّا مَنۡ هُوَ صَالِ ٱلۡجَحِيمِ

Translation of the meaningexcept those ˹destined˺ to burn in Hell

وَمَا مِنَّآ إِلَّا لَهُۥ مَقَامࣱ مَّعۡلُومࣱ‏

Translation of the meaning˹The angels respond,˺ “There is not one of us without an assigned station ˹of worship˺

وَإِنَّا لَنَحۡنُ ٱلصَّآفُّونَ

Translation of the meaningWe are indeed the ones lined up in ranks ˹for Allah˺

وَإِنَّا لَنَحۡنُ ٱلۡمُسَبِّحُونَ

Translation of the meaningAnd we are indeed the ones ˹constantly˺ glorifying ˹His praise˺.”

وَإِن كَانُواْ لَيَقُولُونَ

Translation of the meaningThey certainly used to say

لَوۡ أَنَّ عِندَنَا ذِكۡرࣰ ا مِّنَ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ

Translation of the meaning“If only we had a Reminder like ˹those of˺ earlier peoples

لَكُنَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِينَ

Translation of the meaningwe would have truly been Allah’s devoted servants.”

فَكَفَرُواْ بِهِۦۖ فَسَوۡفَ يَعۡلَمُونَ

Translation of the meaningBut ˹now˺ they reject it, so they will soon know

وَلَقَدۡ سَبَقَتۡ كَلِمَتُنَا لِعِبَادِنَا ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِينَ

Translation of the meaningOur Word has already gone forth to Our servants, the messengers

إِنَّهُمۡ لَهُمُ ٱلۡمَنصُورُونَ

Translation of the meaningthat they would surely be helped

وَإِنَّ جُندَنَا لَهُمُ ٱلۡغَٰلِبُونَ

Translation of the meaningand that Our forces will certainly prevail

فَتَوَلَّ عَنۡهُمۡ حَتَّىٰ حِينࣲ‏

Translation of the meaningSo turn away from the deniers for a while ˹O Prophet˺

وَأَبۡصِرۡهُمۡ فَسَوۡفَ يُبۡصِرُونَ

Translation of the meaningYou will see ˹what will happen to˺ them, and they too will see

أَفَبِعَذَابِنَا يَسۡتَعۡجِلُونَ

Translation of the meaningDo they ˹really˺ wish to hasten Our punishment

فَإِذَا نَزَلَ بِسَاحَتِهِمۡ فَسَآءَ صَبَاحُ ٱلۡمُنذَرِينَ

Translation of the meaningYet when it descends upon them: how evil will that morning be for those who had been warned

وَتَوَلَّ عَنۡهُمۡ حَتَّىٰ حِينࣲ‏

Translation of the meaningAnd turn away from them for a while

وَأَبۡصِرۡ فَسَوۡفَ يُبۡصِرُونَ

Translation of the meaningYou will see, and they too will see

سُبۡحَٰنَ رَبِّكَ رَبِّ ٱلۡعِزَّةِ عَمَّا يَصِفُونَ

Translation of the meaningGlorified is your Lord—the Lord of Honour and Power—above what they claim

وَسَلَٰمٌ عَلَى ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِينَ

Translation of the meaningPeace be upon the messengers

وَٱلۡحَمۡدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ

Translation of the meaningAnd praise be to Allah—Lord of all worlds
